Apron Power 2009! A photo contest

Yes! To everyone who's asked me this year: I AM going to run another Apron Power! photo contest - and wanted to let you know in case your mother or mother-in-law were wondering what to give you for Christmas.

For some of you, it might generate a lot of surprise that you're asking for an apron :)

I announced the first Apron Power contest in December 2006:

After years of never wearing an apron, I am rarely without my I Love Lucy retro apron - one of those from-me-to-me presents I splurged on last Christmas.

Here I am wearing it while making enchiladas on Christmas Eve:

I was 70 pounds heavier then. I'll take another this Christmas Eve and post them side by side :)

Unfortunately, the aprons and the company that made them seem to have disappeared - which I only learned as I was prepared to urge you all to get one for yourselves. Update: soon after the originals disappeared, my enterprising friend Connie at Smockity Frocks bought up a bunch of oilcloth and began producing the same apron

Shannon from Austin wrote me last week to let me know that on the Sunday Morning Show, Charles Osgood had interviewed a woman who is doing her best to bring back the apron. As I looked up the background, I realized that I had grown to love wearing my apron this year - I put it on whenever I am in the kitchen and it means I am ready for business! My kids and hubby seem to enjoy seeing me in it (lots of warm fuzzies thinking of mom cooking for them) - not to mention how much cleaner my clothes are because of it :)

There is actually an Apron Chronicles exhibit of photos and stories of aprons making its way around the country.

So here it is - for 2009: TaDa!

Announcing Apron Power 2009 - the Contest!

I say it's time to bring back the apron - and I don't mean the unisex cloth chef's apron, but the frilly feminine - even to the point of useless - kind.

Send me a picture of you in your apron and I promise not only to run it, but to send the ten best ones - according to your votes - a copy of my last book The Mommy Survival Guide. Remember, practical is okay (mine is practical because it covers a lot and is made of oilcloth), but the criteria for this contest includes femininity.

Other criteria:
You must be wearing the apron
Context and creativity

Entries due January 25. I will post them as I receive them, but also in a batch on January 26 for voting. Winners will be announced February 1.

Be sure to spread the word!

See 2008 entries at my Contest Archives - you might want to bookmark the spot.) And here are the winners:

This post just brought back wonderful memories of my mother, who made old towels into aprons. She would sew a long bit of cloth along the length of the towel. She would wear the apron around her neck rather than put them around her waist. Given our current economic situation, it seems like such a great way to make a cute apron.

I enjoy nothing more than being able to cook a great family feast, wearing my favorite apron, using a recipe out of my favorite cook book, which currently is "Cooking with All Things Trader Joe's," by Deana Gunn and Wona Miniati's. Maybe I will actually have time to make this reality after Christmas lol!

Thank you for linking to me, Barbara! I owe my start in blogging to you. You encouraged me to begin and to keep it up. (Did you know I just won a Homeschool Blog Award?) I still get regular apron orders, too. I will always be grateful for your encouragement!

Barbara,
Did you notice that everyone wearing an apron was smiling?

May I ask you a question about your oilcloth apron? Would you say that it is very breathable fabric? Does it add too much to your body temperature? I need to start wearing more aprons but I am concerned about feeling too hot wearing one like the one you have. We live in Texas and in the summer my kitchen is already unbearable just by turning the oven on. Thanks for your help!
