    The Little Red Hen
Hooray for a good work ethic! The little red hen asks but receives no help in her efforts to put bread on the table. Yet all who wouldn't help would like to eat. In a refreshingly old-fashioned triumph of moral consequences, they don't get to!

    Noisy Nora
Poor Nora! The loveable mousette experiences all the pangs of the child-in-the- middle, caught between the demands of baby brother and bossiness of big sister. Catchy meter, playful illustrations make for a wonderfully satisfying mouse's tale. Baby-Preschool

The Holly and the Ivy - 3 versions

Do you know this one? The vivid lyrics make this a good choice to teach children:

The Holly and the Ivy

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a blossom
As white as lily flower
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To be our sweet Saviour
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a berry
As red as any blood
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To do poor sinners good
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a prickle
As sharp as any thorn;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
On Christmas Day in the morn.
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly bears a bark
As bitter as any gall;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
For to redeem us all.
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

The holly and the ivy
Now both are full well grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown.
O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir

Natalie Cole is Nat King Cole's daughter, btw, but maybe I'm the only one old enough to remember who he was :)

Here is a lovely version by the Westminster Choir in England:

But I think my favorite is George Winston's piano version - this is just an amateur slideshow with his music as background, but I want you to hear it:

George Winston's album December, which also boasts beautiful versions of Carol of the Bells and Pachelbel's Canon, has been my favorite background Christmas album for years.

I found that first version so moving. I love the artwork.

We love George Winston's December here too. My husband already had it when we got married, so I have gone from listening to it as a new bride far away from the home where I grew up to having it as background to the hustle and bustle of our home with four children. Music can trigger memories and feelings in a really special way.

Thanks for sharing that!

Wow. I don't know how many times in my life I have heard this song and never LISTENED to the words. I have been putting up Christmas music and movies on my site this month, and will be sharing this one also, and linking back to you. It blessed me today. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
