Parents: what do you think of NFL advertising?

Common Sense Media is dedicated to improving the media and entertainment lives of kids and families.  "We exist because media and entertainment profoundly impact the social, emotional, and physical development of our nation's children. Common Sense Media's Study

Hundreds of parents have spoken to us about the intrusion of truly adult content into a family program. In response, Common Sense Media has spent the last four months reviewing the ads and network promos broadcast during pro football games. We reviewed more than 50 games -- more than 160 hours of coverage -- and watched more than 5,000 commercials.

Our Results

1 out of every 6 commercials shown contained messages and images that were inappropriate for young kids. 40% of the games included advertisements for erectile-dysfunction drugs (Viagra® and Cialis®) More than 500 of the ads involved significant levels of violence, including gun fights, explosions and murders. 300 of the ads were for alcohol. 80 of the ads included significant levels of sexuality, including scenes about prostitution and strippers. Nearly half (44.7%) of the violent and sexual ads were promotions by the networks for their own programs.

On a related note, NBC has refused to air the CatholicVote.org video - Imagine the Potential - during the Superbowl (the video is the beautiful ultrasound footage describing Barack Obama as a child who was abandoned by his father and raised by a struggling mother). The network said that the ad was "too political". Trash is in and beauty is out ...

My family loves to watch football. It has been a source of much annoyane to me that they have those ads on shows that they KNOW young men and boys are watching. I have written letters, had group letters written to no avail. I had hoped that the "wardrobe malfunction" of Janet Jackson would have spurred more family friendly ads, but it has not made a bit of difference.

The problem is that these companies that are running these ads have a lot of money and pull a lot of weight. Even more damning is that they get a lot of rewards for their advertising as the products they are showing have a strong draw. I wish there were something we can do about this. I feel like a fly trying to get through glass. Some other route has to be found as the letter writing just isn't going to do it, and we are outnumber by far by those who advocate and use the products advertised.

When you get someone who was the Republican candidate for president (Robert Dole!!) advocating and appearing on Viagra commercials, you know it is an immense beast we are trying to beat. Head on ain't gonna do it. I am most interested in hearing some new tactics, as I am at a standstill in getting anywhere after years of fighting this sort of thing.
