  • The Little Red Hen
    The Little Red Hen
Hooray for a good work ethic! The little red hen asks but receives no help in her efforts to put bread on the table. Yet all who wouldn't help would like to eat. In a refreshingly old-fashioned triumph of moral consequences, they don't get to!
  • Noisy Nora
    Noisy Nora
Poor Nora! The loveable mousette experiences all the pangs of the child-in-the- middle, caught between the demands of baby brother and bossiness of big sister. Catchy meter, playful illustrations make for a wonderfully satisfying mouse's tale. Baby-Preschool
  • A Chair for My Mother
    A Chair for My Mother
A remarkably beautiful story told by a young girl whose mother is a waitress. Since they lost all their furniture in a fire, they've been saving mother’s tips in a jar – so they can buy a big comfortable chair for their whole family to enjoy – daughter, mother and grandmother. Life has its ups and downs, but there’s always lots of love. Ages 4-7

Lououn Arbor Day celebration March 12

forest-trees.jpg2008 Loudoun Arbor Day Celebration Saturday, April 12

The 20th Annual Loudoun Arbor Day Celebration will be held Saturday, April 12, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, just 5 miles south of Leesburg. (Turn right off Evergreen Mills Road onto The Woods Road. The preserve entrance is one mile on the left.)

This year's celebration will kick off with a parade at 11:00 a.m., followed by a ceremony which will include Tree City USA acknowledgements; recognition of Poster Contest winners and presentation of awards to students by Edgar Hatrick, Superintendent of Loudoun County Public Schools, and recognition of Photo Contest winners.

Throughout the day there will be many activities, exhibits, and demonstrations highlighting the numerous uses and benefits of trees.  Come watch how lumber is cut by a sawmill, learn proper tree pruning techniques, help plant trees to create a riparian buffer, limber up for the kids tree climb by Arbor Artists, participate in "A Walk in the Woods" activities by Loudoun Environmental Stewardship Alliance or just come enjoy the day at the park.  In addition, Home Depot will be conducting a "Kids Workshop" and providing free materials for children to build birdhouses.  The Hamilton Ruritan Club will be selling tasty barbeque and other refreshments.  All other activities are free, including free tree seedlings that will be given away by the Virginia Department of Forestry and the Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District.

More information is available by calling the Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District at 703-777-2075.
