Red envelope campaign - send Obama an abortion reminder

The Red Envelope Campaign

Red Envelope The Point, 2/11/09

Facebook users may have run across an advertisement for the Red Envelope Campaign (Facebook membership may be required to view the link), a way to let our new president hear our pro-life voices. It's a simple concept: just buy (or make out of construction paper) a red envelope, seal it up (yes, empty), address it to the president, and add this note on the back of the envelope: "This envelope represents one child who died in abortion. It is empty because that life was unable to offer anything to the world. Responsibility begins with conception."

You may wonder, "What good will this do?" No one but God can answer that, but the campaign reminds me of the "launcher" tactic used by William Wilberforce and others as they fought against slavery in the British Empire. It's a simple, peaceful way of drawing attention to an evil that needs to be changed. President Obama, as Chuck Colson noted in this BreakPoint commentary, is confused on this issue: he rightly believes that God does not support taking innocent life, yet he is staunchly pro-abortion.

I bought a pack of 10 envelopes on Saturday and shared them with my Sunday school class members, who have asked for more. So, you might not only do this yourself, you may want to make it a project at your church.

Here's the address so you don't have to look it up:

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington, DC  20550

Several readers sent me this, and I must confess I am late to pick up on it as I was feeling like "What good would this do?"  But I like Diane Singer's answer to that - and so I am finally passing this on.

In reconsidering, I think this is also a good symbolic protest for children to take part in.  We all need to have the dreaded but real discussion with our children to explain the reality of abortion.  Like THE talk, we want this to be something we introduce to them personally, backed with our personal wisdom and prayer.

If this campaign resonates with you, then, I would suggest doing it as a family.  Also, use white labels for the address to make it readable to the Post Office machinery.

The date for sending them is March 31.

I really like this idea. It's peaceful and too the point. I will share it with my small group tonight. :)

I did this a few weeks ago and shared it with several members of my church who also did it. It may not directly affect Pres. Obama, but someone in that White House mailroom it may touch and make them second guess what they may have previously thought on abortion.

Our family worked on this project today, Barbara. I posted pictures. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I will be sending out 190 red envelopes this coming Tuesday, March 31st. As I wrote these envelopes, I continualy prayed: Come Holy Spirit ~ surround President Obama and convict him of his need for Jesus . . . that his heart would be softened, he’d surrender his life to Jesus Christ, and he would bring an end to abortion. In the name of Jesus! Amen!

After the envelopes are mailed, what next? Here are some thoughts . . .

With every red envelope a prayer has been said
and now we’re asking the Spirit of God
to speak to the heart of every person ahead
who’ll be handling and passing them on

through the mail to their final destination ~
the office of the President of the United States.
We’ve been obedient to follow God’s direction,
now we’re praying Barack Obama does the same.

Obedience to the mandates of a holy, mighty God
is something that this man must recognize
is necessary for God’s protection to remain upon this land;
if he ignores God, he’ll be accountable for those who die . . .

because God makes the delicate inner parts,
every tiny creation He forms.
Knitting it together in woman’s womb –
a child God intends to be born.

Present in utter seclusion,
He presides as the child quickly grows.
The color of its eyes, each day of its life
are things the Lord already knows.

He said, “Whoever welcomes a child,
welcomes and cares for Me.
Don’t prevent them, let them come –
let the children come to Me.”

But there are those who would laugh in God’s face,
destroying the child not yet born.
“The choice is all ours”, they loudly proclaim,
and they kill what belongs to the Lord . . .

They kill what belongs to the Lord.
