Ben's recital - now I'm off to California!

It's been a long day - and i have another one in front of me today.  Right now I'm sitting in Dulles Airport catching up on comments and email since I was away from home all day.

Tripp and I packed up some pillows ands blankets in the car, then left at noon to pick up Justin, Danile, Jesse, Jonny and Maddy at their schools to drive down to Lynchburg to see Ben's senior recital.  It's a four-hour trip but we stopped for dinner - a treat for the kids since we don't go out to dinner very much at all.

Ben's recital was held in an old church/  The aocustics were wonderful and the show was filmed, so I hope to share some parts when I get a copy.  An hour and a half of my son singing solo - what a wonderful treat!  There were classical pieces in several languages, opera selections and a selection of American traditional songs.

He closed with "There Is a Balm in Gilead" and "Give Me Jesus" - I was in tears.  How did Tripp and I produce such a gifted singer?  And it was nice to see Zach and Sophia and all Ben's teachers and friends - and Anna who is so lovely and was dressed up to match Ben in his tux.

So we took them all out afterward.  Our dilemma was that I have a flight leaving Dulles this morning at 6:15.  If we drove home, we could put the kids to bed and get 90 minutes of sleep, then Tripp could get up to drive me to the airport.  So the simplest thing seemed to be to just drop ke off at the airport on the way home.  I've been here since 2:30, but actually the past two hours have gone by pretty painlessly as Tripp loaned me his laptop.  As soon as I wrap this up. I will mosey on over to the ticket counter which just opened and make my way closer to the gate.

I love Dulles Airport, btw - the most beautiful airport in the world and so efficient and serene.

Oh, where I'm going:  I'm on my way to Mount Hermon for a week where I will be ser ving on the Critique Team and teaching a couple of classes.  Mt. Hermon is where I got my start as a professional writer in 1995 and where I have been teaching each spring since 2000 or so.  It is a blessing and a privilege.  I love working with new writers and encouraging them to perfect their craft and keep writing.

Tripp is doing better each day - which is why this is possible.  His knee is so much better.  He is still on the antibiotics, and that is the hard part as they make him very sick.  But he actually had a pretty good day today - at least i think so.  he is not the kind of person to complain.

Jen - a MommyLife reader and friend from California - is picking me up at SFO to drive me to Mt. Hermon.  I will be blogging later - as soon as I get some rest.
Love,

I wish you were coming into Southern California so that I could actually meet you. Sigh! Maybe some day we will make it to Virginia/DC.
