I'm pretty sure my son and I had this at the end of March. We had a terrible flu, but were told by our insurance company's representative to NOT go to the doctor unless we developed a secondary infection because Dr's offices are breeding grounds for flu spread. I was also told that they are seeing less benefit from anti-virals as the flu mutates and becomes resistant.
I now wish we had so they could have done testing to see which strain we had. We had recently traveled to Kansas, and I'm sure that information would have been useful in light of this newest outbreak. I'm not sure if there's anything I can do now, but I would encourage anyone else with the flu to see their doctor, even if only to see which strain has infected them.

“I'm not sure if there's anything I can do now, but I would encourage anyone else with the flu to see their doctor, even if only to see which strain has infected them.”
That is a very dangerous and self centered recommendation. The prescribed treatments for all flu strains are the same. By going out into a public facility does nothing more then endanger the lives of others to a virus that cannot be prevented by vaccine. Does knowing that you may have endangered the health and well being of others justify the knowledge of knowing how you are endangering them? Knowing what strain of a virus does noting to prevent the spread of the virus or the treatment of those infected. Never being exposed is always more effective then being vaccinated for every virus.

What is the difference between this and the regular run-of-the-mill flu? I've been trying to find out what makes this particular one so bad.

Our family always gets the flu shot, and for the past 3 years in a row, we get some version of the flu at the same time every February....I have found it to be much more bearable since I started using natural remedies. One of my favorites is " Berry Well" which is an echinacea blend from www.beeyoutiful.com Another natural, yet stinky remedy is GOOT ( Garlic Oil Treatment) Google will give you more information.

Resident Old Man, Perhaps I wasn't clear about why I think people should have thier type tested.
I meant that it is important to try to identify if a particular person has been infected with this strain in order alert health officials in the area that a case has been found so that they can take appropriate action.
I think a lot of people who had the flu over the past few weeks were told something similar to what I was told, which may have allowed for the flu to spread unchecked. I definitely don't want to expose healthy people to a dangerous flu, but I also think that doing nothing might put more people at risk.
Sorry I didn't explain that well the firt time.
