Susan Boyle sings

What makes a person beautiful?

From Britain's Got Talent 4/11 - embedding has been disabled, but click the screen to get there.

Susan Boyle is a 47-year-old spinster who says she's never been kissed. Which only adds more poignancy to the song she sings - "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables.

Barbara, Thank you for posting this! I am absolutely inspired by her courage.

Wonderful! What's really neat is that my 4 year old daughter said, "she's pretty!" I thought she meant the blonde judge, but when I asked her who she pointed at Ms. Boyle. Interesting...

I found this online and figured you might enjoy it as well. :)

I love the little jig she did at the end. What an angel.

You have made me cry for the second time this week. Not a common occurrence!

My three teen daughters and I have been exploring the "mean girl" culture this week. It is really a mean person world, I suppose. One cannot help but notice the scorn on the faces of the two male judges and the crowd before this gal sings. The unguarded contempt for her physical being, that's what made me cry.

Yes she has a beautiful voice. Thank you.

Why did it all feel so fake to me? I thought the scorn from the audience and the judges beforehand to be a bit over the top. Miss Boyle was quite good, but I didn't think she was amazing. Very talented, though.

Dang it, Barbara. You have me in a bucket of tears again. That was beautiful. The human spirit and such a beautiful voice.

She has a lovely voice and demeanor. But this clip shows exactly why I can't bear to watch this type of program nor let my kids see it. It reminds me of how certain kids were treated back in school, and yet these are adults! In their minds, she was a loser before she even started. Some would point out that she has risen above it. Yes, but what about the millions of souls watching. Must she sing well to be worth anything? What if she hadn't sung well? Google "Simon Cowell insults" and see how mean he can be. Why do people subject themselves to this? Because we are an idolatrous culture and some people who crave adoration are willing to take a risk for it. I know this sounds alarmist, but I believe we are heading toward and will eventually have Roman Colosseum-type entertainment. Thumbs up or thumbs down.

I know, evergreen, what you are saying, but I still feel that it was a triumph for inner beauty. If you see Susan's bio; one of 8 children, born with a disability (what I can't find out) mocked in school, cared for aging parents while she deferred her dream of acting and the best, a regular church goer who sang in the choir.
She was a winner before she took the stage!

I can't stop watching this clip. I agree, great choice of song, but the best part is that she clearly didn't let life kill her dream. I hope comes out on top in this contest, but the fact is, regardless of how all that plays out, she has already won.

I thought that was beautiful. Yeah, I don't like the stagey-ness of it all, but honestly, I'm sure she knew how caustic certain people can be, and how eager people would be to laugh at her, but she did it anyway. :)

She is beautiful. :)
