Curtis Update/Challenger Little League Jamboree 5/10
It's been a busy week. Or I should say, It's been the Mother of All Busy Weeks. I've got some catching up to do.
First, you need to get the picture that with Tripp not up to speed since September, things aren't as together around here as we were used to having them. Add to that that:
- Three college kids came home with all their STUFF and there are now eleven Curtises under one roof - at least until May 22 when Ben flies the coop to marry Anna.
- Sophia came home on crutches because she sprained her ankle playing Frisbee the last week of school. But when I say sprained her ankle, this is beyond any sprain I've ever seen, as her leg was swollen from the knee to the toes as though she had elephantiasis. So not only will she not be able to dance at her brother's wedding, but she cannot help us get ready.
- Maddy is NEVER home as she is singing in a bluegrass band. Yeah, I know bluegrass does not sound like something Maddy would be singing, but sometimes a special guy has a way of sparking new interests - and her special guy is in a bluegrass band so now they sing together - with three or four gigs a week (she likes that word!) and odd juxtapositions like cantoring at Mass and then singing blugrass at a fair an hour later.
- It's spring in Virginia and everything is growing like crazy, which means not only that the battle keeping the green in check is now fully engaged - but that also allergies are full speed ahead. I am finally over a horrendous bout of sinusitis that required steroids to bring under control.
- Tuesday three or four of Ben's friends will move in for four days - which means feeding 15 three meals a day. And a rehearsal dinner for 45 on Thursday night.
Other than that, things are normal :)
I did want to share the pictures from the Challenger Little League Jamboree last weekend. It is an annual event for families of kids with special needs who play on Challenger teams. They provide us with rooms at a beautiful hotel at Virginia Beach. A real blessings, and something the boys look forward to each year. Tripp is the coach for our local team, but he couldn't make the three day trip this year, so It was just Mom and five kids.
Friday night was the dance - this year a Pirate theme:
Saturday, opening ceremonies included some aging bikers - Daniel was looking so longingly at the bikes, that he snagged an invitation to sit on one! How cool is that?
Back to the hotel and the beach:
Back to the fields for the tournament. It's so heartwarming to see everyone, regardless of disability, included:
Back to the beach, then warming up in the Lazy River, an indoor pool with rocks and waterfalls and a current that floats kids - and me - gently along:
Sunday back to the beach, then saying goodbye to the hotel:
And a six hour drive home (should have been four, but that's how Sundays go on 95) to celebrate Mother's Day.
You know, I've been doing this mothering thing for almost 40 years, but it never grows old. And then once in a while, I get a perk like this. My life is so blessed!

Looks like a wonderful weekend -- you are so lucky! :)
I think it's very cool that Maddy is singing bluegrass. I've been into bluegrass and early country gospel lately -- old timers like the Carters, the Browns, the Barrier Brothers, the Florida Boys, etc.
