Les Miserables - One Day More

One of my kids asked me a few weeks ago after we went to see a play, why we were seeing a play if we were broke. While I am all about saving money on anything I can possibly save money on, I am also committed to bringing culture to my family. So I would rather pay artists to see the fruit of their labor than keep my house comfortably warm. I'd rather forgo new sheets and towels in order to expose my children to music and theater. And I'd rather skip crummy movies (Blockbuster's now up to 4.99 for rentals) and eat grilled cheese sandwiches to save up for a musical like Les Miserables.

If you haven't seen Les Miserables, I want to urge you to do whatever you can to get tickets to see this incredibly moving show - a real Christian story of redemption and grace. Our family has probably seen Les Miz eight or nine times since 1998. It is part of the fabric of our lives.

We have all read the book by Victor Hugo as well - some of us more than once. You might want to read the essay I wrote a few years ago: Legalism vs. Grace in Les Miserables.

I know I got behind on Animal Farm and plan to wrap that up this week. Been thinking that perhaps the next Book Club would be for readers who want to read Les Miserables along with me this summer - having a discussion on a certain day each week. Will make a formal announcement soon.

In the meantime, though - think Father's Day, birthdays, anniversary - get tickets for Les Miz and be ready to feel a difference in your life!

Love,

Count me in! I grew up in a family that didn't have that much exposure to the arts. We were encouraged to take part in playing an instrument or acting in a schooll play of course, but not much at all aside from Blockbuster lol. I want to make it drastically different for my kids, and I am still learning how to do so. (we took them to the local onbase highschool performance of Beauty and the Beast a month ago. It's a start right? :) all this to say, I have never read Les Miserables. Never seen it, don't even know exactly what it is all about...but count me in the book club idea! I'm traveling home for 7 weeks in august (first and only time for 7 years being overseas!) and I would love to have this as my "summer book"...assuming the kids give me time to read it lol! ;)

We absolutely love Les Mis. We listen to 10th anniversary recording every time we're on a road trip. We've never seen it live, but would love to. My in-laws were able to see the original london cast during the first run. It was easily one of the highlights of their entire lives. I completely agree with you about exposure to the arts.

Wonderful! I have never read it before. I usually choose a good book for summer reading before I head off to the cottage...and this will be it!
I will very much look forward to the discussion afterward too. :)

It is my favorite musical that I have seen, and look forward to seeing it sometime with my husband. I have never read the book, though, so count me in.
