Les Miserables Summer Reading Club - getting excited!
I had to order a new copy of Les Misérables (Signet Classics)
since one of my kids left ours at college.
Ours was pretty well worn anyway - though I've got to hand it to Signet for a wellmade paperback. Ours has been read by various family members, some several times (I've read it twice) - so at least 10 readings - and still had a lot of life left. I don't know how they sell it for only 7.95.
Someone yesterday commented on feeling intimidated by the size of the book. It is indeed proportioned rather like a very thick brick. When I unwrapped mine today, Tripp quipped, "This looks like something you could build houses with."
And then we laughed because Les Miserables is something that can really help build your home. Those of you who've committed to reading along together this summer will know what I mean by the time we're through.
Our projected start date is June 1. I will post an introduction that day and then every Monday after. It's never too late to join in.

Oh fine! I may have to join in. I read Les Mis when I was 13. My grandparents were taking me to NYC and we were going to see it on Broadway and my mother wanted me to know what the story was. It was tough sledding for a 13-year-old, but I did it. And I was glad, because I would never have been able to follow the play otherwise, especially from where our seats were located. Since then, I have seen the movie with Liam Neeson and enjoyed that very much. So, I may have to get it from the library. :)

To anyone considering reading this fabulous novel: Be sure to read a few pages before you buy a translation of Les Miserables...because some translations are just awkward and awful.
