Brita system for pure economical water
In response to my entry on the cost and hazards of bottled water, several readers have recommended the Brita system, including this unique twist:
Combining the health aspect with a Montessori one- We use the Brita filter that has a convenient spigot on in and that is long and low and stays in our fridge. Then I keep the water glasses in a low cupboard. I haven't gotten a glass of water for my children since we got this over a year ago now. (They are 3 and 5) My oldest also gets the water on the table at dinner time. The great thing is, is how excited they are to have gotten it themselves. And a really sweet side effect is when I have been sick or sometimes when I am nursing the baby they unexpectedly bring me a glass of water. :)Tiffany
We have used this system ourselves and it is in the long run a real money saver. Just thought I'd link to the options in case anyone is thinking of investing in one:

We have one of the old square Brita pitchers that I keep in the fridge. I got it for $1 at Value Village. Second-hand shops are amazing! It didn't have any cracks in it, and it had all the parts except for a filter, but I would have tossed that anyhow. (A second-hand filter? Ew!) I can't stand water fresh from the tap, so I am willing to pay for the filters each month. Especially since it's so much cheaper than buying bottled water all the time! I have a nice 2-cup water bottle I got from my last employer, so it's easy to keep track of how much water I'm drinking in a day, too.
Sometimes I think I need another pitcher, though, as my partner likes room-temperature water and doesn't always put the pitcher back in the fridge. *sigh*
