  • Noisy Nora
    Noisy Nora
Poor Nora! The loveable mousette experiences all the pangs of the child-in-the- middle, caught between the demands of baby brother and bossiness of big sister. Catchy meter, playful illustrations make for a wonderfully satisfying mouse's tale. Baby-Preschool

Homeschooling? Please order through MommyLife!

stack of books.gif I hope some of my homeschooling readers might consider ordering their books through MommyLife this year. With this kind of support, you make it possible for me to continue choosing blogging over paid writing opportunities. I much prefer to be here for you every day.

I've added a Home Education section under Barbara's Picks. These are books I have used myself in 10 years of homeschooling - or books recommended by MommyLife readers. If you have recommendations you'd like to share - for this or any other category - please email me.

While the prices of some of these can be formidable - as with Saxon math, which I highly recommend for its no-frills and extremely effective approach - there are often used copies available at Amazon for pennies on the dollar.

In addition to Saxon, I want to specifically recommend the God's Gift of Language series, which covers grammar and structure through the elementary and middle school grades. These books are excellent, as they teach from avery traditional approach, as opposed to the currently fashionable "just get them writing" approach, which has resulted in a generation who says "me and my brother went to the store" (or "me and him"), rather than "My brother and I" or "he and I."

Or "You did good" as opposed to the correct "You did well." As someone who loves the English language, I find this grates on my nerves. And no matter how common the usage is, this kind of mistake will limit the circles in which your children might eventually be called to travel.

So give them a solid foundation. My adult kids and I were reminiscing about these books the other day. They are all very good to excellent writers, and I think it is because of this early training. And if you didn't have good training yourself, you will learn to understand and appreciate our language as you use these books with your children.

Whatever books you use, please consider checking Amazon. Remember that you cannot bookmark my link or leave things in your shopping cart for later if you want MommyLife to get credit. You need to go in through my link each time.

Please know that I am very grateful for this opportunity to make MommyLife a going concern. You can also donate to MommyLife through the paypal button in my left sidebar.

THANK YOU thank you thank you!!!! This is will help tremendously as I am still so green to hometeaching, and the MANY resources avaliable!

Also, thank you for the note regarding amazon and needing to click your link each time. I didn't know that!

And lastly... I am having rounds with PayPal being overseas. I heart Paypal, but I hate the hoops it makes you go through. Eventually I will figure it out again...I seem to remember having issues when we first moved to England too.

Thank you! This is going to be so helpful. My son just turned 4, but since he's reading already (thanks to Mommy Teach me to Read!) we are planning on starting kindergarten in the fall.

I really appreciate you bringing these resources together. We feel like we're wondering a bit aimlessly through all the homeschooling resources.

I'm so glad that you're helping those of us on the road behind you in the parenting journey.

Barbara,

You are really performing a much needed service for the homeschool community.

If you need a list of which of John Saxon's editions are still valid, please visit my website and look ar the September 2008 Newsletter.

These are the only editions homeschool families using Saxon should use as the older editions - and in some cases the newer editiions as well - will not correctly interface with the curriculum as John designed it.

If you or your readers have any questions about John Saxon's math books and their correct use, please feel free to email or call me.
