Loudoun teen summer theater workshop - starts Monday!
The Growing Stage - which has nurtured my kids' love of musical theater since we moved to Loudoun County from California in 2002 - is kicking off its 2009 summer season at a fabulous venue: Franklin Park Arts Center.
It doesn't get much better than that! Have you been to The Barn to see any productions? Great theater, stage, sound, ambiance. Jeff Stern, Ben Schoenberg and crew do an amazing job of running Franklin Park. And Connie Lamothe, artistic director, and the Board and camp directors (including my daughter Sophia for the third year) do an outstanding job of providing a rich and meaningful experience for the kids and the community.
Growing Stage is offering a half dozen camps this summer, but from what I understand, the only one with space available is the one that will kick off the summer season: The Who's Tommy.
Can anyone say Pinball Wizard?
Since this is a production for rising 8th to 12th graders, some of the rough edges will be smoothed. The Growing Stage has always been very sensitive to serving families.
If you've thought about giving your child a musical theater experience, this is THE BEST one you could give, I promise. The three week camp culminates in a production for family and friends and you will be amazed by what these kids - under caring directors - can accomplish in such a short time.
I also will say that one thing I have loved about my kids' involvement in theater is the supportive network of friends they've developed - beyond the boundaries of their own schools and extending county-wide. My experience is that musical kids tend to be a cut above in kindness and caring.
No experience necessary. Parents consider this for their children for many reasons - including building confidence and poise.
The Who's Tommy at The Barn at Franklin Park. Based on The Who's rock-opera, Tommy, Peter Townshend's tale of a young boy's journey from pain to triumph is the most electrifying evening of rock and roll ever to play in a theatre! Experience is not necessary to participate in this workshop. All students will be cast in an on-stage role and work behind the stage, as well. (Rising 8th - 12th graders, $550 workshop fee)
