Obama: US "one of the largest Muslim countries in the world"

While our State government is busy doing puff pieces on our Glorious Leader's glamorous - and ultra-expensive - "dinner dates" while avoiding his latest Apology Tour through the Middle East, the UK is the best source of real news:

Barack Hussein Obama: US "one of the largest Muslim countries in the world"
Posted By: Toby Harnden at Jun 3, 2009 at 04:14:00

"It is important to note that "if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we'd be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world".

So says President Barack Obama. Or I should say: Barack Hussein Obama.

That's right: Barack Hussein Obama. Say it proud. Say it out loud. The middle moniker that dared not speak its name during the election campaign is now front and centre of the US president's attempt to woo the Muslim world, the theme of his visits to Riyadh on Wednesday and Cairo on Thursday.

Petrified of the potential political fallout of being branded a Muslim, Candidate Obama - a practicing Christian - never used the name "Hussein" and its use was frowned upon as a forbidden code for the nutty accusation that he was some kind of Islamic Manchurian candidate.

No more. To say Barack Hussein Obama - BHO for short - now appears to be the height of political correctness.

As I argue in this analysis for the Telegraph dead tree edition, Obama is seeking to return to a Middle East policy based on realism - buttressed by the bona fides of his own multi-cultural (including Muslim) background.

In Strasbourg two months ago, the president tried out his full name. Days later in Ankara, he was introduced to the Turkish parliament by his full name.

As ABC's Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller astutely outline here, the Obama administration is embracing the new president's inner Muslim, as it were. Deputy national security adviser stated that Obama had "experienced Islam on three continents...growing up in Indonesia, having a Muslim father -- obviously Muslim Americans [are] a key part of Illinois and Chicago".

So that's once, twice, three times a Muslim?

Just in case the Arab world hasn't yet got this message of inbuilt tolerance, Mr Obama himself has gone a step further. In an interview with France's Canal Plus released on Tuesday evening, he suggested that the United States might be a Muslim country.

How have we come to this?

This has the feel of a Trojan horse, doesn't it? Sneaking in as a "Christian", then fully identifying as a Muslim once the power is in his grasp. Just plain creeps me out.

What also gives me a pause is how the pure demographic numbers don't line up. As of 2007, 78% of us were self-identified "Christians". I'll leave it up to debate as to how many truly follow Christ, but nevertheless, our cultural identity as a whole is Christian. Out of our population, just 0.6% identified as Muslim, making (with roughly 300million people), a Muslim population of just 1.8million people. No offense to Muslims, but we are NOT the largest Muslim nation in the world. Iran alone has over 70million people, nearly all of whom are Muslim.

Shouldn't all the "Christian" voters who put him in office be a little disturbed by the way his comments sidelined the significantly Christian populace of this nation? It's one thing to claim that we have a significant population of Muslims in this country- 1.8million people is a significant number- but to state that we are one of the largest Muslim nations in the world is a bit arrogant. Kind of like equating a house cat to a tiger. I think Iran would take some offense to that!

Thanks for the news Barbara, and letting me put my 2 cents in! Keep us posted!

I wonder if he's lying or if he just flat-out doesn't know the actual demographics here. According to the US Census 2009 Statistical Abstract, approximately 0.6% of Americans self-identify as Muslim. With a total population of about 306,578,666, that works out to fewer than 2 million Muslims.

Iraq's population of 31,234,000 people is 97% Muslim -- adding up to more than 30 million Muslims.

98% of Iran's 70,472,846 people are Muslims, so count over 69 million Muslims there.

Wikipedia had a hard time pinning down the actual population of Kuwait, but it was estimated at 3 million, 85% -- or 2,550,000 -- of which is Muslim. Even that tiny country has over half a million more Muslims than does the United States.

Doesn't the POTUS' teleprompter have a fact checker?

Lou Dobbs fact checking says that 30 other countries have larger Muslim populations than the US - including India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan...
