Improving Reading Comprehension in children

Someone ordered one of these yesterday, which reminded me that this series was an absolute priority in our homeschooling program.

I cannot praise these books highly enough! Beyond rote reading skills, children need to understand what they read.

These workbooks are well-designed and intelligent, and from the earliest years provide your child with a wide range of reading selections, preparing them to read thoroughly beyond those things that grab their interest.

This is great preparation for SAT tests - though I would recommend them for so many other reasons.

Reading comprehension is not a priority in many classrooms, so even if your child is in public school, these workbooks might be a worthwhile supplement at home. And far less expensive than professional tutoring. I know you will enjoy them too and they will hone your skills as a teacher.

Since they are available at Amazon, I will post the links. You will need the keys, which are blessedly not full workbooks, but simple 12 page booklets also available at Amazon.

I think some helpful information for homeschoolers is that the early reading books are for grades 2-4; reading comprehension is from grades 3-9; MORE reading comprehension is at a high school level. Sample pages are available at

[Thanks, Michelle. Each of my kids went through the entire series in order. I asked two of my Big Boys this morning if they remembered them and whether they thought they were helpful and they said Absolutely.

All of my kids, btw, are voracious readers and choose to read widely - everything from scifi to classics to history to Shakespeare.

If you can develop good reading skills early on, the child will grow up with a desire and ability to educate himself on any subject he chooses.

Thanks again, Michelle!]

I read your blog daily - thanks for putting it together.

But, when you do a post like this recommending a product, there is usually no product link or product name. Is something not working on your end, or is something goofy on my computer? If it wasn't for Michele's comment, I would have no idea what books you are writing about.

Thanks

[Becky, what browser are you using? Anyone else having trouble? These should be linked to the Amazon descriptions/reviews]

Barbara,

I subscribe to your blog using google reader and I have the same issue with this type of entry. I have to click over to your actual blogsite to see the product and the link. But, it's easy enough to do!
