Regina Spektor - on laughing at God

Y'all know I love Regina Spektor. She's just come out with a song called "Laughing With" - about how we relate to God. Let me know what you think:

Laughing With Lyrics:

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one's laughing at God when they're starving or freezing or so very poor

No one laughs at God when the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one's laughing at God when it's gotten real late and their kid's not back from that party yet

No one laughs at God when their airplane starts to uncontrollably shake
No one's laughing at God when they see the one they love hand in hand with someone else and they hope that they're mistaken
No one laughs at God when the cops knock on their door and they say "We've got some bad new, sir,"
No one's laughing at God when there's a famine, fire or flood

But God can be funny
At a cocktail party while listening to a good God-themed joke or
Or when the crazies say he hates us and they get so red in the head you think that they're about to choke

God can be funny
When told he'll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie
Who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus

God can be so hilarious
Ha ha
Ha ha

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one's laughing at God when they've lost all they got and they don't know what for

No one laughs at God on the day they realize that the last sight they'll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes
No one's laughing at God when they're saying their goodbyes

But God can be funny
At a cocktail party while listening to a good God-themed joke or
Or when the crazies say he hates us and they get so red in the head you think that they're about to choke

God can be funny
When told he'll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie
Who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus

God can be so hilarious

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war

No one's laughing at God in a hospital
No one's laughing at God in a war

No one's laughing at God when they're starving or freezing or so very poor

No one's laughing at God
No one's laughing at God
No one's laughing at God
We're all laughing with God

i really like this song with its powerful lyrics......

I really love Regina's music, and I even got the chance to go see her live. It was really a bummer when I found out that she headlined at a Planned Parenthood benefit concert (I believe it's called Rock for Choice) in January in celebration of Roe v Wade.

Sometimes I wish celebrities and musicians would stay neutral on these issues, because I just can't listen to her anymore, it's not the same. Anyway, I will not be attending another concert or buying her new CD. I don't know where my money would be going...

[ouch. one of those times I wished I hadn't learned something new....we can pray for her to see the truth and to become passionate for it.]

On second thought and after a little more research - are you sure it was Regina Spektor? Because I found something that said Amanda Palmer had covered a Regina Spektor song (Apres le Deluge), but I could find nothing that linked her name to them otherwise.

I, too, was very sad to find out that Regina Spektor supports Planned Parenthood. She has a brilliant, quirky gift, but I can't seem to separate her music and her social philosophy in my mind. My ardently pro-life 14 year old daughter will be very disappointed to find out that one of the artists she likes is pro choice...
I am sure we won't be supporting Spektor with any music purchases.

Sorry, Barbara, but unfortunately the performer was Regina Spektor Very disappointing but true. See below:

This song is great. I don't know why you are down on her for supporting Planned Parenthood. NO ONE thinks abortion is a good thing, but it is necessary. How would you like it if you were told you couldn't have your appendix out or your liver transplant if you needed one? Each of us should be allowed to decide what is right for our own bodies. It isn't anyone else's right to tell us what we can and can't do.

Alison freebairn-smith:

ohhh. And what about the poor baby's body? Does he/she have a right on what you do to him/her?

Maybe that person doesn't have any rights.

Is it rational to base your musical choices off of whether an artist is pro-choice or pro-life? You can like the art without agreeing with the creator. Imagine if you eliminated from your life all songs by pro-choice singers, all movies by pro-choice actors, all books by pro-choice authors, and all sporting events featuring pro-choice athletes. With what would you be left?

I agree. Emma. Each of us is so imperfect that anything of value we create must be judged apart from our character flaws and on its own merits. God works through imperfect people to accomplish beautiful things. The Bible is full of such stories.

Victor Hugo lived a pretty flawed life and yet wrote a masterpiece of Christian grace and redemption.

Thanks for your insight.
