Pictures from Boston
This was my fourth trip to Boston in the past two years - twice before I've been there on writing assignments. This time I had time to explore with the kids. Boston is a beautiful and family-friendly city. Maddy, Jonny, Justin and I had a great time!
We went to the Museum of Science:
We did something Maddy has always wanted to do in DC - the Duck Tour, which uses ridiculously awkward amphibious vehicles to tour the city and then whatever waterway is handy - in Boston, the Charles River:
I don't know about other Duck Tours, but Boston prides itself on charismatic conductors. Ours was funny in a droll way - we learned while laughing. I love Boston's architecture and the blend of old and new. Our guide explained that the architect of this building, knowing he could not surpass the incomparable architecture next to it, simply opted to make it reflect. Maddy snapped this as we were passing by. That's her leg in the back. I was glad we had the best seats :)
When we reached the Charles, our guide switched from wheels to propeller and we floated down the river. Jonny and Justin got to steer for a while:
Later we walked around Boston Common, including the cemetery where many signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried.
Thought you'd like this marker, which reads:
Josiah Franklin and Abiah his wife lie here interred. They lived lovingly together in wedlock fifty-five years, and without an estate or any gainful employment, by constant labor and honest industry maintained a large family comfortably and brought up thirteen children and seven grandchildren respectably. From this instance, reader, be encouraged to diligence in thy calling, and distrust not Providence. He was a pious and prudent man; she a discreet and virtuous woman.
Their youngest son, in filial regard to their memory places this stone
I'd never heard of the tradition of leaving pennies on graves - had to look it up later:
Boston Common has a wonderful Children's Playground - made me grateful I had kids with me!
The kids wanted me to know they were tired:
But we had more to see. Loved the Boston Public Garden:
Yes, it's Mother Duck and Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Oack, Pack and Quack from Make Way for Ducklings- one of our family's favorite classics! What a wonderful surprise to see them enshrined in their storybook home!
We had a great time and made a lot of memories!

Aw! Make Way for Ducklings! I loved that book as a child, and have read it to my kids many times, which has renewed my ability to rattle off the names -- Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Oack, Pack, and Quack! I will have to get the kids to Boston's Public Garden at some point!
Glad you all enjoyed your time in Boston!
