Smithsonian Air and Space Museum - Curtis and Duquette
We were very blessed when a few years ago the Smithsonian opened a new branch of the National Air and Space Museum near Dulles Airport - which means suburban Virginia, half an hour from us.
So when I heard that a long-time reader (first comment June 5, 2005!) wanted to meet while taking a family vacation in DC this week, it seemed like a great meeting place.
I won't say it was easy as she had four children and husband in tow and since their whole family is very knowledgeable about all things aeronautical, it must have been difficult to multitask.
I had six kids in tow - Zach, Maddy, Jonny, Jesse, Daniel and Justin.
But I had it easier as we'd all been there several times before and the two older kids shepherded the little kids while Jane and I talked and I gathered some bits of information about what I was seeing - but not really seeing, if you know what I mean.
Here are the two moms:
Here is a shot of moms and kids taken by Jane's very patient and loving husband:
I didn't take pictures of the planes as I've been there and taken those before. But I found the satellites fascinating:
And they've also added some human-interest stuff, which is great for non-techies like me:
That's the original model for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I like how fantasy has a place in modern science :)
I loved meeting Jane and learning about how God built their family. It's a story full of miracles and grace - like those of almost everyone I get to talk to. Great family - all but one introverts, but the extro certainly makes up for everyone else!
I loved meeting you, Jane! In spite of the fact that we live 3000 miles away, it was like meeting an old friend. Thank God for the Internet.
Anyone else coming to DC soon?

I wish I was there too!
I have to make it a point to plan some vacations in DC. I would love to see the city with you as my guide!!!
