Curtis family surprise get together

IMG_5038.JPG

One part of parenthood you don't think about when you're up to your ears in diapers and pb&j is what it will look like in 20 or 30 years.

What it looks like is your kids are coming and going all the time.  Grandchildren add more busy schedules to the mix.  Trying to get everyone home to celebrate a birthday or two is difficult and things get put on hold.

Like Samantha's 40th birthday and Tripp's 55th (Samantha was 13 when Tripp and I got married) - September 17 and 15.  The Walraven family was at the beach last week and got home Sunday but soccer games meant we had to postpone our normal Sunday dinner.

Yesterday morning Ben called and he and Anna had come up from Charlottesville to visit her mom and wanted to come by before going home.  What a wonderful surprise!  And I already had a crockpot of spaghetti sauce with meatballs so we could have dinner.  Called Samantha and their calendar was clear after school.  Called Josh and he could come, though Hattie couldn't.  Matt had to work and Maddy had rehearsal.  But altogether we were able to round up 18 family members to celebrate the birthdays with pies from Hill High Country Store

My grandchildren were wearing the Thing 1 and Thing 2  - and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6  - shirts they had bought on the Boardwalk at Ocean City (NJ).

Are those the coolest?  I've looked but can't find a place online to buy them.  I know Maddy would love to have a Thing 9 shirt.   She always introduces herself that way.

In case anyone has forgotten Thing 1 and Thing 2, here's a reminder from Cat in the Hat:

Glad to see the grandkids....I've been wondering why we don't hear more about them.

Oh, I love it!! Gee, I wonder if I could make a costume for my two youngest (ages 3 and 6) like that? Call them Thing One and Thing Two. :)

Great picture Barbara! I need to find the same T-shirt for my sons! I'm so glad that you were able to get a bunch of your kids and grandkids together.

Those shirts are great. My brother calls my two little ones Thing 1 and Thing 2. Good to know that we can go beyond that should we have any more kids.

I love the shirts! Who wouldn't immediately recognize that theme? I give mom cudos for having the patience to find the appropriate number in the appropriate size...with me, they'd have been out of "Thing 3" in size 10 or "Thing 4" in size 4. ;)

Adorable! I love the costume idea:). Currently storing them up for our kids when the time comes...

Lovely pics!

Can Samantha remember the name of the shop she bought the T shirts from? Perhaps if you phoned them you could have a 'Thing 9' shirt sent to you.

Or failing that, perhaps you could get a custom shirt done?

Just a thought.
