Loudoun County Schools - 9/8 Obama address - Updated

[September 17 Update: A lot has happened since this blog entry - and there has been much misrepresentation in the media.  For an up-to-date and factual summary of the background of this controversy, see Loudoun Public Schools, Obama address - a summary.]

Re: Obama's address to public school students September 8 - including before and after Classroom Activities - received this reply to my email to the LCPS School Board and Superintendent Hatrick:

Barbara,
Thank you for the update. I read the letter but would expect us to know the position of the Virginia Department of Education to whom we report prior to deciding to participate or not.
Regards
Bob O__ Esq.
Broad Run District School Board Member

This morning I wrote a second letter to the entire board and Supt. Hatrick:

I contacted Charles Pyle, VDOE Director of Communications and he said - as I anticipated he would - that the VDOE has not given schools any guidance on this issue as the question of whether instruction would be interrupted to have children watch the president's address would be made at the local level.

There are a considerable number of parents planning not to send their children to school on September 8 unless they have some assurance that their children's first day back at school will not be interrupted to begin what could be a continuing intrusion of the Executive branch into our local schools.

In the absence of school board or administration leadership on this issue, I will write each of my children's principals to find out how each school is handling it. I will keep children home from any school participating. And I will pass on my opinion to my readership - now numbering 7000 visits/day.

Still wishing you a successful school year and still supportive of the many positive aspects of Loudoun Schools - but compelled to address important issues.

Barbara Curtis

I want to urge all concerned public school parents to contact their schools at every level: state, local school board, and individual schools. Use email so that there is a record. Please share anything you want in the comments or send to me.

Love,
