Loudoun Valley High 9/11: is Obama's speech optional? Were parents told?

[September 17 Update: A lot has happened since this blog entry - and there has been much misrepresentation in the media.  For an up-to-date and factual summary of the background of this controversy, see Loudoun Public Schools, Obama address - a summary.]

Via email, fax and hand delivered

Dear Ms. Ross -

I understand that the president's speech will be shown in homerooms this morning. Maddy was not clear - didn't hear the whole announcement - on whether students were told that they could opt out of this viewing.

I hope it is made clear before the viewing that it is not mandatory.

My children - Jonny and Maddy - wish to opt out. My understanding is that they will go to the cafeteria. I hope I am not the only parent who has this information and that my children aren't singled out because other parents/students did not know they had a choice.

Respectfully yours.

Why do you want to prevent your children from viewing the President's speech? Isn't this a perfect opportunity to discuss the issues with them and help them learn to assess information they come across? Particularly when all their classmates will have the opportunity to do with each other, their teachers and parents.

[SheilaK - It's not that I want to prevent my children from watching the speech. I just want to insure that in the hands of Obama-supporting teachers it doesn't become a propaganda opportunity.

I prefer to watch this sort of thing with my children. We watched Obama's speech to Congress Wednesday night. Actually, I think that's plenty of Obama for the week :)

Did you know that in his address to students, Obama used the word "I" over 60 times? Which goes to show it's more about him - and branding his narrative and his image - than about them. Who knows how bad it might have been had it not come under prior scrutiny.

Thanks for asking - just a different perspective to think about.]
