Ponyo
Tripp and I took the kids to see Ponyo a few days ago - on the recommendation of Jane and her family when they were visiting DC recently. In the car, we called Sophia - who is at college - to chat and when she heard we were going, she was sooo disappointed. Turns out she is a big fan of the director, Hayao Miyazaki - and she couldn't believe we would go see a film by him without her. Since I love the films and music my older kids turn me on to, we were both surprised I had somehow missed the memo on this one.
"Besides," she said, "Where would you be able to see a movie by Miyazaki?"
Yes, I admit, we do live out in the boonies. Gone are the days when Tripp and I frequented rep theaters in San Francisco and Marin enjoying all kinds of esoteric fare. *sigh* But that's why we have Netflix!
But here's the deal: Miyazaki's latest movie has been dubbed in English and is being distributed by Disney, so that even those of us in Multiplex Land all discover this beautiful and whimsical gem.
We really loved Ponyo. Though there's a lot of fantasy, I thoroughly enjoyed the authenticity of real life - a very human mother, a warm portrayal of the elderly, the consistent good manners and respect, and the theme of self-sacrifice.
The animation is so beautiful - very different from American. The connectedness of the people to the sea surrounding them is very intriguing culturally. And of course, coming from a Montessori background, I love the authentic child's point of view.
These are just some hasty notes as my family is waking up and we will be off to church soon.

I am SO glad you all enjoyed it. I remember that you once commented that some supposed children movie turned out way to be too scary for one of your younger boys. I knew that this would be good for him without being boring or just too stupid for an adult to want to watch. Good movies are rare and should be supported. We had a great time visiting with you and are all hoping that you will come out to visit with us sometime soon. Hint..Hint..

Miyazaki created one of our all-time favorite movies: TOTORO
It may be 20 years old but it still enchants us. Such a gentle, delightful, imaginative animated film.
