Children's Books on Saints

I mentioned yesterday shifting from Halloween to the original feast of All Saints Day. You don't have to be Catholic to appreciate the stories of the saints. Misunderstandings about Catholics worshiping saints have led to fellow believers throwing out our common heritage of early church heroes.

As Evangelical homeschoolers, my kids grew up with picture books of St. Francis, St. Jerome, St. Joan of Arc. Just as we tell our children stories of national heroes, these are stories that speak to children of love and sacrifice and dedication to God.

Some of these are available used from Amazon at very low prices. And all are part of the 4-for-3 Sale - plus free shipping on orders over $25.

I really want to encourage you to buy books and music for your children rather than toys (other than classic toys like building blocks, wagons, dollhouses). With 12 kids 9-40, I've been through my share of "kids' stuff" and have seen that the mother's work that matters most in the lives of children is the introduction of concepts and ideas - and the building of a strong cultural heritage.

Enjoy!

Barbara,

I recently ordered (from amazon.com, of course!) two "chapter books" for older children about St. John Vianney (the Cure of Ars). As you may know, Pope Benedict XVI has declared this as a "Year for Priests" and St. John Vianney is being highlighted since he is patron saint of parish priests. After the books arrive and we have a chance to read them, I will let you know what my children and I think of them, in case you would like to recommend them. Also, I welcome any recommendations of books about saints for middle school readers.

We have loved reading the Amy Welborn books on Saints. There are at least 2. They are short stories that could hold the interest of even an older 2 or young 3 year old. Lots of saints to chose from, both warriors and princesses.
