Columbus Day - resources, links

columbus.jpg

Now that I'm back in Virginia, I'm glad we can celebrate the significance of Columbus Day. In northern California, I'm afraid this type of holiday elicited a certain amount of embarrassment in a culture that felt uncomfortable around anything that had to do with tradition or national pride.

How important is Columbus Day where you live?

In any case, here are some great ways to supplement whatever your kids are learning about Christopher Columbus and his voyage of discovery:

Christopher Columbus (a cool and child-friendly BBC site for kids to learn and quiz themselves)

European Voyages of Exploration: Christopher Columbus

Columbus Day activities and games - includes coloring pages and even a chapter book to print out.

I was just reading an article about Columbus not being politically correct anymore. One school had their 5th graders put him on trial. They found him guilty of murder (I think) and sentenced him to life in prison.
