Nativity Sets for Children - now updated!
I know right now we're focused on Thanksgiving, but some moms are thinking ahead to Christmas and I just want to put in a pitch to budget for a Nativity Set your kids can play with.
When we think Nativities, we usually think of the very special, very beautiful ones we unwrap at Christmas that may be too fragile for anything other than admiring from afar.
Have you ever thought how wonderful it would be for your kids to have their own nativity set to play with? Keep in mind that - as Maria Montessori taught long ago - children learn with their hands and their senses. A nativity set that they can touch and manipulate and unite with their imagination will provide the basis for the abstract concepts of the incarnation of Christ when they are older.
Here are a few worth considering:

How funny -- my husband just bought the Playmobil set for our kids over the weekend. The four year old loved following the simple instructions to put together the three wise men with their accessories and various robes. A very cute starter set for us -- even though I have to make sure the baby doesn't go near it, since it's full of little pieces. Great post! Now: what are your recommendations for beautiful advent calendars for small children? Love,
Laurie

We leave our Fisher Price set out year round for the children to play with. Baby Jesus has taken train rides, been cradled by stuffed animals, and shared a room in their dollhouse! I hope, as they grow, this becomes even more "relevant" as Jesus really is with them where ever they go and whatever they do. :)

We have the Kurt Adler set and my kids love it. Every day the pieces are in a new spot. Usually, they're all huddled around baby Jesus. Momma thinks that's a good thing!

Love the playmobil set. We treasure it and remarkably have all pieces after 4 or 5 years.

We have the Little People set and my kids have loved it! I like some of these other ones, too. I think my kids are getting old enough to graduate to a more mature set, although one that they can still touch.

Funny you should mention this. I just ordered one from CatholicChild. They had it 50% off.
I guess I had better clear this house out of a lot of toys real soon. :)

We have this one Olive Wood Children's Nativity Set (12 Pieces Set).
(or rather something very similar, ours a friend got in Israel when they were there). We all love it. We also have a set made from felt and filled with beans that the children's great-great grandmother made for my mother in law when she was a little girl.
(I added this one to the list, Tiffany - thanks)

Each of my girls got a nativity set for their first Christmas. Each one is different, but wooden -- something they can play with as children but still display as adults.
