Scott Hahn - Signs of Life: Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots

signs of life 2.jpgScott Hahn has a new book coming out November 3 and it looks very promising, especially reading the advance reviews.

Signs of Life: 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots

For those not familiar with Scott Hahn, I've clipped his bio from Wikipedia - which I know is accurate because since becoming Catholic two years ago, I've read a few of his books:

Hahn started out as a Presbyterian minister and theologian with years of ministry experience in congregations of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America or PC(USA), and Professor of Theology at Chesapeake Theological Seminary.

As a young theologian, Scott Hahn was convinced that the Catholic Church was bad, and boasted of having converted some Catholics into embracing a purer Christianity. His conversion began when he and his wife became convinced that contraception was contrary to God's law. He continued to study various issues relating to salvation, faith, and good works, as well as the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura. . . .

Scott Hahn converted to Catholicism at Easter 1986 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

You can read more about his current work at Scott Hahn: Catholic Convert.

As much as I wish I had grown up in the Catholic Church, one of the beautiful things about being a convert is the sense of wonder at the the traditions and heritage, the sense of continuity of the Catholic Church. This is what makes Scott Hahn's writing so valuable to all Catholics. It's also valuable to Protestants who - despite being taught that the Catholic Church is unbiblical - are curious enough to investigate for themselves.

Here are just a few of the reviews for Signs of Life
:

"Lifelong Catholics realize that it usually takes a convert to help us appreciate and better understand the customs and practices we too often take for granted. Scott Hahn does just that in this immensely reable yet substantive loving look at Catholic prayer, devotions, and beliefs." -- Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York

"There is genius in Catholicism and once again Scott Hahn unveils it like the masterpiece that it is. Every chapter of Signs of Life is filled with insights and practices that will change the way you live your life and celebrate your faith."
-- Matthew Kelly, New York Times bestselling author of Rediscovering Catholicism and The Rhythm of Life

"Things done for too long can become a habit -- and habits have a way of losing their meaning. In this long awaited treasure of a book, Scott Hahn reveals the historical and biblical roots of so many Catholic practices. Finally Catholics will not only know what to do, but why they do it." -- Raymond Arroyo, New York Times bestselling author and host of EWTN's The World Over Live

"Professor Hahn's purpose is both devotional and apologetic. In showing how Catholic popular piety is scripturally grounded, he explains practices that shape Catholic life and help us grow in grace. This is a book that will be helpful to individuals and to the Church as a whole." -- Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago
