Chris Matthews dumps on Bishop Tobin re Kennedy, abortion
How obnoxious! But if you can't make it through Matthews' relentless rudeness, at least catch the final moments when Mr.-Tingle-Up-His-Leg (aka Mr.-Ratings-Dropping-Like-a-Lead-Balloon) tells Bishop Tobin he needs to study the law before commenting on it. The Bishop gets in the last word and it is elegantly simple:
For background, see Puncit & Pundette: Clarity on Patrick Kennedy and Bishop Tobin.
Bishop Tobin makes me proud to be a Catholic!

Bishop Tobin is our bishop. We are proud of him. Patrick Kennedy needs to step down. He needs help. Watch Bishop Tobin again tonight on Bill O'Reilly at 9pm FOXNEWS. O'Relliy will allow Bishop Tobin to actually speak!
Abortion is a human rights issue. And the Bishop is speaking up on behalf of the voiceless millions victimized by the viloent act of abortion. In 2007 he admonished Patrick in PRIVATE, via a letter, to abstain from Holy Communion, Kennedy brought this into the public arena. To recieve the Eucharist means to BE in COMMUNION with the Church. He is not because of his very PUBLIC stance in abortion rights.

Chris Matthews was mostly on a major rant. Even when he >finally allowed the Bishop to speak, he was still making noises thus interfering with his answer.
Bishop Tobin was spot on throughout. Matthews' quote from the scriptures doesn't apply here...it was taken totally out of context. Matthews might as well have said, "shut up, Catholic Church."
Tobin showed great patience and poise. He was brilliant.
Matthews? (thumbs down)

Was that supposed to be an interview? For once I wish the urban legend was true, and one of the nuns who taught Chris Matthews would seek him out and rap his head with a large ruler. God bless the Archbishop - he has the patience of Job!

Well, that was hard to watch.....what an absolute jerk!!!
Mathews and his rants.....when is he going to get the memo that we don't care what he thinks....we don't even watch him.....a copy of the latest ratings should do him well.

I'm impressed! Bishop Tobin really showed some strength in allowing Chris Matthews to interrupt him time and time again. I loved when he said "I appreciate the time to try and explain it," with a smirk. Matthews is despicable here and frankly I'm appalled at how good he is at pretty much ignoring his "interviewee" and just ranting the whole time. Awesome job by the Bishop, though.

I did have to skip to the end because I found Matthew's breathless rant and his "about to pounce" posture so annoying. The Archbishop was only granted a moment to speak when Matthews needed to remoisten his mouth from it's ceaselss yapping. I can only wonder how much oxygen Matthew's brain is getting while on these rants that leave no time for air-intake.

In analyzing his behavior last night, you have to understand that Matthews loves two things far more than the Church or the unborn - - the Kennedys and the Democratic party.

Does Chris Matthews ever stop speaking. I loved the patience from the Bishop - he truly is a man of God - what a testimony. My favorite C M part was when he compared a mid-wife and med school dropout. I feel for the family of Chris Matthews - maybe he and Kieth Olberman are neighbors and their wives send them out to play together so they can get some peace and quiet.

Chris Matthews very forcefully articulated the problems with the Church imposing its moral authority on the secular jobs of our lawmakers. I don't know that I've ever seen anyone do this as provacatively (or effectively) as Matthews did when he confronted Bishop Tobin. Tobin was obviously unprepared.
[Patrick Kennedy picked this fight. Bishop Tobin was dealing with a wayward Catholic the way he should. Bishop Tobin was probably unprepared for someone as crazy out-of-control as Chris Matthews. Other than that, he behaved with the patience of a good parent with a tantrumming child.]

Uggggg!
I had a hard time actually listening/watching all of this because Chris Matthews was acting like the adult equivalent to a school yard bully.
Gosh, I found myself just really wanting to reach out and SMACK him! I know that's not appropriate, but I'm just being honest here.
This Bishop is a patience, wise man. Sometimes it is best to let someone just go on and on, and say enough to show who they really are.
Regardless of where you stand on this issue, all who see this will realize how pathetic Matthews is behaving. He was not doing pro-choice folks any favors, but--hey, good for us pro-lifers. The man acted like a fool.....

I was simply struck (contra beth's opinion above) how inefective Matthews was. He kept repeating the same 3-4 sentences over and over and over without taking a breath. And then when he finally gives the Bishop time to speak, he completely misses the point of what was said. It was obvious he had his mind made up with a faulty scriptural understanding and then refused to give the other side a chance to explain his point of view.
I felt sorry for Matthews. The Bishop was incredibly kind and adult about the whole thing.

I actually feel sorry for those that think the Catholic Church is at fault here. The stance on abortion has never changed and has always been available for discussion. I can't stand C.M and his ranting yet unfortunately for those that actually think he's brilliant, they believe he's proved a point.
It's very unfortunate that those that hate the Church are willing to try to say that a faithful Catholic can't be in politics. If that's the case, why have politicians at all? Why have laws at all? Heck, why have a civilized society?

I'm not Catholic, but I totally agree with the Catholic's view on abortion. Bishop Tobin was very patient and gracious during the interview. I hope people see Chris Matthews for who he really is. He was very rude to the Bishop. I hate it when this happens and they call it an "interview"! It was more like an interrogation! Blessings on you, Barb.
