Leesburg Courthouse Christmas ban: beware the backlash!

julie smith.jpgJulie Smith, Founder of the National Organization of Conservative Women notes in Nativity Sanitized from Virginia Courthouse, that we have Democrats to thank for this illegal - and last-minute - theft of our longstanding tradition:

A committee appointed by a predominantly Democrat Board of Supervisors developed a master plan in February discussing turning out the Christmas lights darkening the Courthouse lawn during the Christmas season and forbidding the nativity creche from ever again being displayed. The committee choosing just before the start of the holiday season to disclose their crafted policy, a policy that will dim Christmas spirit and inevitably create tension for small business owners trying to entice shoppers in an already economically depressed market.

This bold move will reflect badly for the committee and the Board of Supervisors who appointed the committee members. Better said, a shocking move in the wake of a sweep from conservative candidates Governor-elect Bob McDonnell, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling and Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli during November elections as Virginians voted out government interference choosing instead the pursuit of freedom and the preservation of liberty. Virginians proved to be for Freedom Lovers, and Virginians will not tolerate the heavy hand of intolerance under the guise of political correctness crushing Christmas spirit in our hometowns.

NBC Washington reports in Leesburg Gets Scrooged:

The Facilities and Grounds Committee said it's just following the county government's policy against displays on county grounds.

The Rotary Club hopes the committee reconsiders, but for now, it's looking a lot less like Christmas.

  • Sign the petition.
  • Forward it to your church, family and friends.
  • Call the Board of Supervisors and find out who was on the committee, what input was solicited, and how the decision was made.
  • If the Board is not cooperative, file an FOIA request for all records and documents regarding this decision.
  • Make some noise. Call talk radio shows tomorrow and Monday. Start local - Grandy and Andy, Laura Ingraham - but go for the big shows too.
  • Contact the Thomas More Law Center, ADF, Liberty Counsel, ACLJ. While I hope we don't have to resort to a lawsuit, - which will cost taxpayer dollars for something the Board will never be able to defend successfully - there are groups that can help.
  • Think about running against our current Supervisors next time around. We turned the state red in November. Let's take back Loudoun too!

Unless this ban is rescinded by Monday, a group of conservative women are working on putting together a demonstration and inviting the media next week. I will keep you posted.

According to law, we have the right to privately-sponsored displays on public property (we do pay for it , after all). We want our Christmas tree and our nativity scene! And we will fight to keep them!

Love,
