Book nook - sling bookshelf

Great deal on a book display - with free Super Saver shipping from Amazon:

Which reminds me I've been meaning to remind you all about creating a reading nook for your child. Occasionally I receive pictures of ways in which moms have implemented some of the ideas in Mommy, Teach Me! and Mommy, Teach Me to Read! (There is actually a photo album of them here.)

Anne sent me a picture of the reading corner she made for her son:

And check out The Book Nook at Little Miracles - make sure you see the picture she printed out and hung at child level to help reinforce the love of reading.

From Mommy, Teach Me to Read!

reading nook 1.jpgHave lots of books in the house as well as snuggly places to read. Make your child's solo reading extra special by creating a reading nook. It doesn't require much area - after all a child isn't very big! - a cozy chair or maybe just a large comfy pillow on the floor next to a sunny window. Decorate with some small pictures hung at his level - especially ones of children reading. Place an inexpensive bookcase (or cover sturdy boxes with contact paper to make your own) to hold his own books.

Great idea for a Christmas present for your child!

Hi Barbara, thanks for the link. It's been forever since I've commented, I've cut back on my on-line time. I'm still enjoying your blog, though.

We still love the book nook! I've noticed that since we temporarily moved the book nook out of the living room to make way for the Christmas tree, that she isn't "reading" as much. I agree that it should be in a place where you normally spend most of your time.

At our old church, there was a great reading nook. An old plastic kiddie pool was filled with pillows and placed by a bookcase. It was very easy to keep the pillows together and very comfortable for one or two small children to snuggle with a book and be out of the way and safe from more active kids playing in the same room. The pillow cases could be washed and the little pool could be easily washed out. It does need to be one of the pools with out a slide in the middle. Hard to find this time of year but very easy at the end of summer.
