Bumbo seats - great for babies with Down syndrome!

I found one of these at a children's clothing swap last summer. I'd never seen one and didn't know what they were called - but having raised four babies with Down syndrome (1 by birth, 3 by adoption - now 17, 14, 13 and 9), I immediately saw the potential and grabbed it for a family in my church who had a baby son with Down syndrome.

Because babies with Down syndrome tend to be hypotonic - that is, floppy - they need some extra help in learning to sit, stand, etc. What a cozy and snug way to help them sit a little earlier and begin using those muscles and gaining confidence!

This morning I was reading Going Rogue (still #4 at Amazon) and Sarah Palin mentioned a Bumbo seat which helped Trig learn to sit up. So it has a name - and they sell it at Amazon. This is a great resource for parents of babies with Down syndrome - as well as the ones with the usual number of chromosomes :) - also a great gift idea:

Bumbo seats are also EXCELLENT for premature babies. My micro preemie's physical therapist recommended one, and it's what finally taught our preemie to sit up on her own. It does the same for full term, babies, of course, although they tend to have a lot less trouble learning to sit.

I have a friend with triplets and these were a lifesaver for her. The babies loved them and she could play with all three at the same time.

Not to detract from the seriousness of these seats....I really wish I had them when my 10 y.o. twins were tots....but there is a series of hilarious videos on the web. They are stop-motion animation and my kids love them! Try this website!
