Down syndrome - one mother's perspective

molly and bliss.jpgI am so privileged to receive mail like this - and just want to share:

Dear Barbara,

My name is Molly and I live in south central Ontario, 2 hours northeast of Toronto, Canada. I stumbled onto your blog last week while googling information on tonsil removal / sleep apnea and children with Down syndrome. I was amazed by your story.

My son, Bliss, has Down syndrome and is now nine and a half. He swims, skates (slowly), shoots baskets, knows every top 40 hit, knows every breed of dog and is reading. We have had scary times (he is a runner) and at times felt very vulnerable and frustrated (by him and by "the system"). However, we would not change a single thing and we feel blessed to have such a beautiful, loving, funny, smart, sensitive and mischievous boy in our lives.

His two little sisters love him deeply and we have and continue to learn so much. As a teacher, B's presence in my life has made me so much more aware of and sensitive towards the different abilities of my students and the concerns and worries of their parents.

I just wanted to let you know, I have been on many sites regarding Down syndrome, special needs and I have met many parents, friends, siblings of people with DS and shared many stories and experiences. Personal sites like yours are so wonderful as they help to put things into perspective and helps to create a feeling that we are connected and not alone. It is very therapeutic for me and I still need this although my boy is almost ten. Thank you.

Molly

Thanks, Molly, for letting me share your perspective.

You can find Molly and Bliss's picture included in my photo album - and on the cover until I get the next photo:
