Birth control shot linked to bone problems
From LifeSiteNews (I don't expect to see this covered by the Tired Old Media since it doesn't fit with their agenda):
Study Finds Half of Women on "Birth Control Shot" Suffer Bone Problems
Monday December 21, 2009Nearly half of women using depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), commonly known as the birth control shot, will experience high bone mineral density (BMD) loss in the hip or lower spine within two years of beginning the contraceptive, according to researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
The study, reported in the January 2010 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was the first to show that women on the birth control shot who smoke, have low levels of calcium intake and never gave birth are at the highest risk for BMD loss. The researchers also found that high risk women continued to experience significant losses in BMD during the third year of the use of the contraceptive injection, especially in the hip - the most common fracture site in elderly women.
DMPA is an injected contraceptive administered to patients every three months. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, more than two million American women use the birth control shot, including approximately 400,000 teens. DMPA is relatively inexpensive compared with some other forms of contraception and doesn't need to be administered daily, which contributes to its popularity.
The study followed 95 DMPA users for two years. In that time, 45 women had at least five percent BMD loss in the lower back or hip. A total of 50 women had less than five percent bone loss at both sites during the same period.
By and large, BMD loss was higher in women who were current smokers, had never given birth and had a daily calcium intake of 600 mg or less - far below the recommended amounts. Moreover, BMD loss substantially increased among the women with all three risk factors.
The researchers followed 27 of the women for an additional year and found that those who experienced significant BMD loss in the first two years continued to lose bone mass.

Not to mention the emotional side effects of Depo! I'm prone to depression (clinical depression runs in my family) and was depressed for the one year I took the shot. No only that, but at the tender age of 19 I experienced weight gain, hot flashes and elevated mood swings from the shot. What your doctors will not tell you is that the shot (Depo) puts your body into a menopausal state where you experience amenorrhea (suspension of your periods) and other hormonal changes typically seen in women approaching menopause.
Just thought everyone should know what they're getting into since the doctors won't tell you.

you know when a woman is pregnant lots of changes happen... I am on my 4th pregnancy and I find it so interesting how God designed our bodies. during pregnancy, I find myself eating more healthy foods, because I actually crave them. toward the ends of the pregnancy, when baby gains most of the weight, I want chocolate, and high carbohydrate foods instead of salads, nuts and fruits. My hair and nails grow healthy and super fast.
My pelvic bones hurt. Yesterday it was particularly painful. I know when they hurt like that is because baby is growing, pelvis needs to expand to make room for baby. Now, I wonder if this will cause your bones to be flexible and reduce your probability of bone loss. Researches show that women that lift weight have less problems with osteoporosis and the reason being their bones are more flexible, in the sense that they get stronger due to the work put on them. I gather pregnancy would do the same for a woman???!!!
Researches also show that women that breastfeed have reduced rates of breast cancer as well as postpartum depression. Hormones are released when a woman breastfeeds baby and bonding happens. :)
Why, oh why do we keep trying to improve on what God has done in such a marvelous and wondrous way??!!!
anyway, my $0.02 again!!
As the previous person who left a comment, do your own research don't take as truth everything your doctor says. Gather your information from your doctor, from books, from other women, from history, from God and then make your decision concerning your health.
Merry Christmas, everybody!! :)

My guess would be women who eat a good diet and have many children and don't smoke probably have the best bones of all , just thinking of my Aunt Carol who fits my description and has wonderfully strong bones as she nears 80.

This bears repeating: The birth control pill, Yaz, has been linked to a number of adverse reactions, including strokes and lawsuits are growing over these issues. Here is some good information: http://www.yaz-may-cause-strokes.com/
