PETA targets Groundhog Day and Punxatawney Phil
PETA wants to replace famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil with an animatronic replica

If there's one organization that loves animatronic technology more than Disney, it's definitely People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
The controversial animal-rights group -- which just a few months back asked the University of Georgia to replace its recently deceased bulldog mascot with a robotic one over concerns for a real dog's welfare -- is at it again. This time around, PETA's target is a seemingly innocuous band of revelers: The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.
Yup -- PETA wants to take Punxsutawney Phil away from Gobbler's Knob and give the little guy a dignified retirement at an animal sanctuary. In his place, you guessed it: A robot groundhog.
Gemma Vaughan, PETA's animals in entertainment specialist, fired off a letter to groundhog club president William Deeley this week, asking for his promise that the group will forgo the use of real rodents in future Groundhog Day celebrations. Little Phil, Vaughan wrote, is a pretty unhappy fellow, "forced to be on display year round at the local library and is denied the ability to prepare for and enter yearly hibernation." Groundhogs are typically shy creatures, Vaughan goes on to explain, and they can become easily upset when confronted by throngs of people, loud noises and camera flashes.

The crazy thing is that these people are probably pro-aborts. I'm just guessing.

These people are getting more crazy and dangerous every day. Just a couple days ago, an animal rights activist in Portland set himself on fire and tried to walk into a fur store to torch it.

Don't these people have anything better to do than to pick on a town with a well cared for and beloved rodent?
Personally, I've been trying to get my husband to shoot the groundhog in our back yard with his hunting bow for the past year now (we live too close to other people for him to shoot it). Those things carry rabies and bite!

Seriously? But...but...I don't even know what to say in the face of such insanity. A...a robot? I'm sputtering.
I bet you're right on with your guess too...I've experienced how these people place animals on a higher moral plane than people. It's like the inmates are running the asylum.
A robot though? Really?

The thing is, people have the choice, animals never do. I don't believe in differing levels of moral planes when it comes to life. A living being is a living being. We as people just happen to get the upper hand more often.
That being said, as long as the ground hog is well cared for, it probably doesn't care either way, and if it's captive bred, it won't know the difference anyway.

These people are nuts. You can tell this little animal, named Phil, is very tame. He allows himself to be picked up and handled without resistence or protest. He seems to like people. I see no sign that he is upset by his life or by being brought out on Feb. 2 nd each year. These people ought to look for real cases of animal abuse and educate people about what animals need, so that we will know better how to take care of them.
