I actually don't think he's not getting the point. I think he's purposefully ignoring the point. I think his mission is to lock in as many socialist programs as possible while he can, because he knows that once those programs are locked in, they become impossible to take away. Just think--if we expanded Medicare a la Obama, could the Repubs take it away EVEN if we got the next presidency and Congress? Unlikely. They'd lose too many votes. Obama's plan isn't so much power for himeself long term as it is to make the U.S. into a socialist nation. I think he's willing to sacrifice his own popularity for that.
