Sleep Sound in Jesus - Michael Card's lullabies
So grateful for my readers! You add so much to the information flow here. Thanks for your comments and emails - which often make me feel like we're brainstorming together on how to bring more to our motherhood.
Erin left a comment on my post last night about Family Blessings, noting that Michael Card had put the verses beginning "The Lord bless you and keep you" to music on his album Sleep Sound In Jesus, and suddenly that beautiful music was playing in my mind.
Yes! This is a MUST-HAVE for any family. A nurse gave me a Sleep Sound in Jesus cassette in 1992 during one of Jonny's many first-year hospital bouts. I can't begin to tell you what a comfort it was to me as we dealt with the life-saving medical intervention he underwent.
It has been a family treasure ever since. And Sophia was very happy to discover it was a favorite in her sweetheart's family too.
If you have children under 12 - or even maybe older - you should get this album, which is available also at Amazon as an MP3 download.
This is a wonderful baby or shower gift too. I used to keep a few on my "presents shelf" in my closet. While it's fun to pick out an outfit, an outfit doesn't last long, but this special music nestles in the hearts of every member of the family for years and years and years.

When I taught preschool (young 2's), this cd was a favorite. We played it during naptime everyday.

We call this the "magic music" in our family. Our children loved this tape and it would soothe even the most distraught child who was fighting their sleep. I love to give this as a baby shower gift and believe it has a place in every family music library. My only caution would be not to play it in the car...it is mighty soothing for adults too!

Thanks for the recommendation. We are preparing to welcome #4 to the family and I'm excited to have a new CD to rock/nurse/comfort to. I just checked iTunes and they have two versions available in case anyone has a gift card from the holidays to spend. :)

Hi Mrs. C,
We have had Michael Card's CD for a few years. Another good one is http://www.amazon.com/McCaughey-Septuplets-Sweet-Dreams/dp/B000034CYF
Others that we have are Serene & Pearl CD's and Rebekah Pearls From The End Of The Earth. My children listen to them often and not just at bedtime.

When my son was an infant, this is the only CD that would soothe him. Now that he is 4yo, he calls these "my songs" whenever he hears them. I stocked up on them a while ago when Family Christian Bookstore had them on sale for $5 each and give them as baby shower gifts all the time.

I hadn't heard of this cd before - thanks! My favorite lullaby cd was a baby shower gift. It was called Sweet Dreams and it was a cd made by/for (not sure which) the McCaughey septuplets. Sandy Patti, Chris Rice, Ginny Owens and more sing on it and it's a family favorite. So is Plumb's Blink CD. I love lullabies. :)

This is a fantastic CD! My sister was actually named after the last song: "Barocha". :)

I listened to this CD many nights of my childhood. My Dad was a techy kind of guy we owned one of the earliest CD players and that was on of the first CD's we ever owned. He would play it from my parents bedroom for us many nights- all our doors were open and the warm light in the hall way coming from my parents room along with the music. We all grew up listening to that CD...My Dad died (at the age of 49) with his wife and 5 children (and 2 spouses) all around him. Moments after his death we played "The Lord Bless you and Keep you"...As I listen to that CD with my babies I remember my Dad and there were so many verses in those songs that I know my Dad was using to speak to us. He wasn't a talkative guy and had a hard time opening up- he shared himself through music. Anyway all that to say it is a very special CD and will bring back warm fussy memories for years to come.

Don't know if "Daddies" can comment here too, so I'll give it a try and see what happens.
I bought this CD WAY before I ever had children, in fact, it was 12 years before - right when the CD came out! It became one of my all-time favorite CD's within weeks of owning it.
My favorite songs are "All You Are", "Sweet Sleep Descends", and "Dreaming Jacob's Dream" - I wish I could find ANY music that sounds like that, by anybody! But I've yet to come that close...
Unfortunately, I lost our CD during our last move! We still have the CD sleeve and jewel case - just no CD! So anyone kind enough, well, you know what I mean.
After we had kids my all-time favorite band released a lullaby CD made up of songs they sung to their own children. It is called "Now The Day Is Over" by the Innocence Mission, a beautiful husband-and-wife band that record their own records in their living room and barely make a living by selling the fruits of their labor and creativity. If you would like to support them I suggest buying the CD directly from them here - http://www.theinnocencemission.com/now%20the%20day%20is%20over.htm
See what you think of it!
