Update: Dominican Sisters on Oprah 2/9

Update courtesy Elizabeth Foss:  At First Things, The Anchoress digs a little deeper to reveal that Oprah is juxtaposing the Sisters with "the World's Only Western Geisha" and an emphasis on sex.  Instead of an honest respectful look, it sounds like this will be treated as a freak show.  The Anchoress points out that our media treat celibate Buddhist priests and nuns with respect, but apparently Catholic nuns' vow of celibacy is up for sensationalism.  Read her report at First Things.

I watched the interview, warily for this reason. Over and over, Oprah and Lisa tried to bring the conversation around to all they have "given up" (sex, material objects, the world) and each time, the sisters seemed to embrace the questions as a chance to teach. They were magnificent. Each time, the sisters acknowledged that sacrifice was involved and then moved on to the gift and joy of the sacrifice. I sensed a softening of Oprah's condescension toward the end of the interview. I'm glad they said yes to the interview.
