Boys' haircuts - save money!
It's been a long time since I ran this - just thought some new readers might be brave enough to give this a whirl - especially with summer weather here.
The best $25 I ever invested was in a Wahl hair clipper kit nineteen years ago when I had four sons under 6.Since then, I figure I've given something like 900 haircuts to those four sons, the four that came later, and my dear hubby, thus saving $9000- 18,000 for the Curtis household. Once in a while I buy a new set of blades.
If I were going to replace my old one - only if it died - I would probably choose the model that comes with a mini-clipper

It's really easy to learn to cut boys' hair. The Wahl kit is now 29.99 - with haircuts $12 or $15 it won't take long to pay for itself.
I also invested in a really good pair of scissors and learned to cut longer hair that way.
I don't have the patience to be as precise as a barber, but I developed my own style of grabbing sections of hair between my fingers (without doing the comb sectioning thing) and cutting at a uniform length.
Be brave!
Besides saving money, it's kind of a sweet ritual - a mother/son bonding thing - and one I highly recommend.
Lots of lovely memories.

i have been cutting my husbands hair for years and years...and he cuts our two sons' hair. although at the moment my husband is in haiti for 2 weeks and both sons are desperately in need of haircuts, so i guess i'll be doing them. my sons have never even stepped in to a barber shop. neither has my husband.

Thank you for including the link to the scissors. I need to buy some and dedicate them to haircutting. Of course, with a house full of children that probably means a lock box, too.
My older boys refuse to go to the stylist now; they only want me to cut it. I wish I had a little more expertise in cutting super-thick hair, but I guess he will eventually get it cut professionally?
It is definitely a great move, cost-wise, to buy clippers in those early years. Like you said, it can save thousands of dollars in big families.

I cut my boys hair ONCE and it's the last time I'll ever do it. I'd trim my oldest sons hair, but will not go near my younger sons. I decided to brave it up while my husband was deployed this last time, I ended up literally balding my younger son who had the unfortunate position of being first. He has a ton of cowlicks and very thick and coarse hair...it's worth the $9.50 when my husband is deployed to pay someone to cut his hair, over having him bald. My oldest son has longer hair, it's finer and gets to a longer state so I can trim it. My husband can cut both of their hair and make them look nice. So every other year we save money on hair cuts.

Theorhetorically, this is a great idea - I wish it would work for us. But ...
My husband asked me to cut his hair - he just has the barber run the clippers on a "2" on him - but I refused. The standing joke between us is that I am (ahem) a little on the clumsy side, and I really didn't want to be responsible for the worst haircut in the history of the world. Seriously, when I told him that, if we had a girl, her name would be "Grace", he laughed until he cried, because what if she took after me? :)
As for my 2 boys, right now they are boycotting haircuts, which is also a great money-saver. Not just because they will get only 2 a year, max, but because it drives my MIL so bananas that they look like "hippies", she pays for them to go get it done. She even takes them for me! The best money and time saver of all!

I used to cut my husband's hair, but in recent years he has taken over that task himself. I just peek in to make sure he has a uniform length.
I also trim my girls hair. I guess I should probably do that this coming week... Thanks for the reminder! :D

I have a similiar kit. I am too chicken to use scissors. However, I am the buzz cut queen on my back deck. Money in the bank. :)

How do you replace the blades or have them sharpened?

I also have a similar kit and have been cutting hubby and son's hair since George's first haircut. Now George will even sit still in his chair for me to cut his. What a time and money saver, especially since we are trying to get debt free in three years. Let me rephrase that...WILL be debt free in three years (except the house).
