Disturbing ads forget impact on kids

From the What in the World Were They Thinking? department:

one day my husband.jpg

one day my husband 2.jpg

I came across these a couple days ago - they were ads on the Dallas public transportation system back in 2008. Don't know how I missed them - except that it was when Tripp was going through his knee replacement/MRSA battle.

While it sounds noble to raise public awareness of the plight of women and children locked in the cycle of domestic violence (for more see my category Domestic Violence), this certainly was an assault on the psyches of many innocent children going about their business riding the bus. There is just no way children - who tend to be very literal thinkers and are incapable of abstract thinking before the age of 8 - can process these messages.

I did some research and found that concerned parents waged a successful campaign to get them removed - but not before hundreds of thousands of Dallas children had them emblazoned on their consciousness.

Just a good reminder to all of us who love children to remember to see the world through their eyes. That was central to Maria Montessori's philosophy.

On my way to rerun that piece now.

Love,

Disturbing perhaps, but that place literally saved my daughter's and my lives 11 years ago.
