Obamas "Do as I say, not as I do"

obamas ribs.jpgFrom The American Thinker:

April 24, 2010
The do-as-I-say (not as I do) duo
Thomas Lifson

The First Smoker and his wife don't always follow their own advice on living healthy to reduce the burden on ObamaCare finances. On yet another long weekend away from the White House, the First Couple indulged in ultra-unhealthy North Carolina barbecue. Jennifer Fermino of the New York Post writes:

Making a weekend getaway to North Carolina, the fitness-fanatical First Lady -- who planted a garden at the White House to promote healthy eating and leads a campaign to fight childhood obesity -- and President Obama immediately hit a barbecue joint.

After posing for pictures with scores of star-struck locals -- Obama even quizzed some on what they ordered -- the first couple got down to business, each ordering the seriously artery-clogging ribs plate at Twelve Bones Smokehouse in Asheville.

The meal included BBQ ribs, greens, baked beans, corn pudding, mac & cheese and corn bread, guzzled back with icy cold sweet teas.

It sounds delicious, but highly caloric and saturated fat-ridden. If one is going to lecture others on healthy living, isn't this the height of hypocrisy? Given how many Americans have a weight problem, the politics of hectoring people on diet, exercise, and smoking, while indulging in the forbidden vices, seem rather counterproductive.

And don't forget our Boy-in-Chief's penchant for hamburgers, which cost taxpayers tens (hundreds?) of thousands every time he decides to take his whle security staff and press corps across the bridge to northern Virginia for a photo op.

Oh, but it's that kind of camaraderie I suppose that keeps the press from showing Obama smoking. Can you imagine Bush getting away with being a confirmed smoker?

Yikes. I dunno. I'm a staunch conservative, I haven't smoked a day in my life, and I proclaim the benefits of whole foods and healthy living on my blog. I make my own bread, make our meals from scratch, and limit processed foods in our home. But if I was vacationing in North Carolina, I might just indulge in a plate of barbecue. Just because one espouses a healthful lifestyle doesn't mean they can't splurge every once in a while. I don't think this makes the First Couple hypocritical; I really don't.

And also, I admit I giggled at the First Smoker comment, but I'm pretty sure Laura Bush was/is a smoker.

I'm all for calling public officials to task for hypocritical behavior, but I'm not sure this qualifies.

While the liberals rant about the high cost of health care, they ignore that individual choices -- to smoke, be overweight and over-consumer prescription drugs -- are behind a lot of these rising costs. Why should I have to pay for poor choices of others, including the President?

Musings, you ever hear the line don't preach that of which you can't practice. We in the military learn quickly that you never give orders of which you wouldn't follow yourself.

Laura Bush used to smoke. At least she had the decency to not be a hypocrite.

If you espouse (force, mandate) a certain life style of the people in your country, but you yourself refuse to engage in said life style... what DOES that make you if not a hypocrite?

I tend to agree with Musings...I am very conservative as well, and I do think that Obama's smoking habit is a big ol' hypocritical mess but the rest of it doesn't bother me (and not much about that family DOESN'T bother me...hehe!) I espouse the virtues of a healthy diet as well, but it doesn't mean that indulging in moderation is a bad (or hypocritical) thing at all. With the caveat that if the Obamas eat like this all the time, then that'd be another can of worms. I doubt they do...they both look fantastic.
