Jonny mows!

Tripp woke up Saturday with the inspiration of how he could teach Jonny - our 18-year-old son with Down syndrome - how to mow the lawn.

He started him off with a safety lesson on the mower, then had him follow on the inside track of where his dad had just mowed. That gave him a visual to rely on until he got the hang of it.

Guess what the first thing he wanted to do when he came home from school yesterday? And this morning he reminded me he wants to do it today too.

Believe me, living in the country, the mowing around here never stops. And now that Matt is gone and Maddy's allergies are too reactive for her to mow, we can use Jonny's help.

Hmmmm....which makes me wonder whether Tripp was inspired or desperate :)

In any case, sometimes we need a little push to challenge our kids - especially those with disabilities - to a higher level of performance. But it is so worth it!

Jonny is walking tall these days!

Love,

Congratulations to you, your husband and Jonny. I was just sitting here thinking how much time I've had on my hands since our mower has been out of commission. I've only mowed once since May 1. Yikes. The repair man is coming Monday at the latest. The grass is getting REALLY TALL. My dh can't mow because of allergies, and our children are both away from home now. I fret so much about the mowing and the lesson this week seems to be: "see, the worst has happened and what can you do about it?" I've enjoyed the break and the lesson and I know it will be OK.

Barbara, please tell Johnny that some of your readers are impressed!

I'm also impressed with Tripp's patience, even if there was a bit of desperation involved :-)
