Phillies pitcher Moyer: 47 with 8 kids and a giving heart
Jamie and Karen Moyer - Philadelphia Phillies pitcher and philanthropists
How faith helps one family juggle career, kids, and caring for others
By Traci Neal
Following a disappointing finish in the 2009 World Series last season and a short winter break, the Philadelphia Phillies plan to hit the field hard this month in Florida. If all goes well, lefty pitcher Jamie Moyer will join the Phils after an injury on the mound during the playoffs forced him to watch his team lose to the Yankees from the bench. But Moyer, who at age 47 is the oldest active player in the Major Leagues, didn't spend his off-season nursing his wounds. Instead, in between surgeries, Moyer helped move his family -- including his eight children -- to Florida where they could be closer to him, and along with his wife, Karen, 44, continued to promote the nonprofit Moyer Foundation (moyerfoundation.org), which helps children in distress. Through the foundation, which was founded in 2000, the Moyers have opened nearly 40 bereavement camps in 28 states, created for children and teens who are grieving the death of a loved one, and Camp Mariposa, for children affected by addiction in their families.

I live in Washington State and am a long-time Mariner fan (Moyer used to be on the team). Jamie Moyer was and is a baseball player who is worthy of being a role model, on and off the field. Thank you for sharing this on your blog.

What a beautiful family. I can't believe that J. Moyer wasn't highlighted in the "Champions of Faith" DVD. For those who haven't heard of it, it is a fantastic, very professionally produced, DVD that showcases Catholic MLB players. The players discuss the role of faith in their lives, and their struggles with pride, vanity, etc. It is very appealing to boys in particular, but our whole family loved it.

While we're talking about baseball players, I would like to also add that Albert Pujols of the Cardinals has a daughter with Down Syndrome and a foundation for kids with DS.

Any Orioles fans out there? In the '90s, one player either lost a child midseason or his child was very sick and hospitalized...I could have sworn it was Jamie Moyer, but that info doesn't appear in his bio. Does anyone know? It was a very sad event.
