Sesame Street nixes Katy Perry
More good news: PBS/Sesame Street responded to parents' complaints about Katy Perry's cleavage display appearance by pulling the segment - originally scheduled to air 9/27 - and issuing the following statement:
"Sesame Street has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists. Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer's opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we've received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube."
Moms and dads, you DO make a difference. Be encouraged! Keep doing all you can to fight the sleaze machine!
Tell your kids how people made a difference!
Be sure to email Sesame Street to say thanks!
As mother to 12 kids 10-41 (3 adopted) and a Montessori teacher, I well remember the first episode of Sesame Street which my daughter Samantha Sunshine and I eagerly watched. During the growth of my family, we went 10 years with no TV, but watched VCR tapes of Sesame Street. I was a big fan.I must admit, I was terribly disappointed with the Katy Perry cleavage segment - but thrilled that you listened to parents with common sense. Katy Perry's music may be catchy and cute, but I do not want her to be a role model for my daughters, nor an ideal held up to my sons.
Thank you so much for listening!

I'm not a fan of the "artistic expression" loophole that excuses their poor judgement.
It is refreshing to find that the level heads prevailed and they removed the segment.
Thanks to you Barbara for the heads up!

barbara, that's good news that they scrapped that idea! i'm glad reasonable people can still be heard! i'm planning on contacting bath and body today on their 800 number for that same reason. i was in their store last week and was surprised at their new 'scent' and the way they are marketing it. very sensual! since when do they use sex to sell their products? i was very disappointed and i told them in the store. i will also tell them on the phone! we have to do what we can to stop this assault.
