MommyLife meets Amy's Humble Musings
Who did I have lunch with yesterday?
First person with the correct answer gets their choice of my books
And after you guess, I'll go back and finish the story :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I first "met" Amy - of Humble Musings fame - on February 18, 2005 when she left a comment at my one-month-old blog. Mommy-blogging had really just begun to pick up steam and it felt so good after years of feeling isolated because of raising kids at home in a world where most of the houses in your neighborhood might be empty all day.
We were all just feeling our way as though we'd moved into a brand spanking new development at the same time. It was very cool - so cool that daytime TV ratings began to fall drastically because mom had found something better to occupy their time. A couple years later I published an article about it in the Christian Science Monitor: Moms Help Moms through Blogs: Mothers need tips on keeping house and raising babies, not advice on eyeliner application..
After many years of not having a conversational outlet, it was exciting to have other moms to share with and it felt as real and immediate as gossiping over the backyard fence. Which is why we could develop close friendships with others we'd never actually set eyes on.
So for me, Amy has been there since my fledgling days of blogging. At the time her blog was called Humble Musings. She was a homeschool mom of 4 - I believe it was four. She was married to a rocket scientist and dispensed spiritual wisdom to other moms - intriguing and memorable insights. She had a lot of followers.
Amy is young enough to be my daughter - or I'm old enough to be her mother - but because I was still raising preschoolers when I started blogging, I had more in common with moms my daughter's age. The twist was that I had 36 years of experience to share about it. Still there was a lot I was able to learn from Amy's Humble Musings.
We were also very sympatico, sharing the same reactions to many things - which became more understandable when we figured out we were both ENTJs. We thrive on change - which people who've read me for any length of time have surely seen. Amy and her husband Greg have been through many changes in the past five years too - pulling up stakes and buying a farm in Kentucky, is only one example.
Amy now has six children and both of us are way too busy to keep in touch more than a few times a year. And yet I still feel close to her. So when she emailed me a while ago to say she'd be in Washington DC and could we get together, I was ready to clear anything off my calendar to do so.
She took the Metro to save me a little driving and I picked her up - with a surprise in tow: her wonderful husband Greg. Amy had suggested we go to an Indian restaurant, and since I hadn't had Indian food for 35 years, I was definitely up for it. We went to a place a mile or so away from the Metro. It was crazy colorful - and we couldn't resist having Greg take our picture in the swing in the lobby before saying goodbye.
There was a buffet and the food was delicious. I love the way they do lamb and really want to learn myself. But the best part was the conversation. When I finally reluctantly said I had to go - I had a yellow school bus to meet back home - I was shocked that we had been talking for three hours without ever running out of things to say.
It was one of those kind of things where you feel like you've always been frineds and always will be friends.
Love you, Amy! And you too, Greg! Take care of each other!
Amy and Greg are special blessings. My hubby and I visited her last year. She was a gracious host. I got to milk her cow too. I was a little out of practice since I haven't milked in a long while. It was quite a treat to wake up in the Scott home and look out at the misty clouds settling over the hills on their land. Picturesque retreat. I can say she is a true friend as I caused her to lose at Rook and she still talks to me.
I am like you. It is so interesting and special to feel so close to people you meet through blogs. While I don't write anymore (Too many exciting things going on here. I will update you privately sometime) and read blogs as much as I used to, the friends I have made greatly enrich my life.
Blessings,
Christina
