An exciting opportunity to see the Metropolitan Opera in an HD Live performance of Puccini's La Fanciulla del West tomorrow at 1:00 pm in your local theater.
And for someone to win two free tickets to see it at the Towne Theater in Fairfax, VA
I've not seen this before, but Deborah Voight calls it "the First spaghetti western," referring to the Italian obsession with America's Wild West.
I can't believe she will ride a horse onstage in the second act!
La Fanciulla del West - Audio Slideshow - Met Opera
For many years, because of the high cost of opera productions, only those with money to burn could afford live opera. Hence, it acquired the reputation of appealing only to the wealthy. And yet, a love of opera hasn't always been an indication of class or wealth. New York City's Italian immigrants, for instance, loved opera.
The Metropolitan Opera has gone a long way to bringing opera back to the people by offering HD Live simulcasts of their performances in selected theaters around the country. Our family has been able to catch a half dozen of them and they are just terrific! Not only can you see the performers much more up close and personal than the patrons actually watching at the Met, but as the actors run offstage at Intermission, you are treated to interviews and insights that make you feel like an opera insider.
Interested? I thought you would be. You can find your local theater and buy tickets for upcoming performances at Fathom Events, and you can find more details of each opera - synopsis, cast list - at The Metropolitan Opera.
Fathom Events has provided tickets for Maddy and me for tomorrow's performance of La Fanciulla del West, for which I am grateful.
And they have also given me two tickets for the 1/8/11 1:00 pm showing at Fairfax Towne Center to give away. If you are interested, please leave a comment and I will draw a winner tonight at 9:00.
