Daylight Savings Time - what do moms think?
I'll admit, I'm dragging this morning - and grumbling about how much I hate Daylight Savings Time. As I got the kids up and ready for school - barely making the buses on time - I carried on an interior debate about the pluses and minuses.
So my hubby gets to barbecue a lot and so the summer evenings stretch on and on like there's no tomorrow. Isn't that nice?
Well no, I decided. I'd rather have the sun wake me up than my alarm clock.
I'm curious. How do you feel about Daylight Savings Time? Am I missing something here?

Barbara, Thanks for the open forum. I loathe it. ...Absolutely see no reason to keep it carried on. I haven't looked at your links yet, but plan to read them with my kids.
What shall we do to end it ?

I really hate dst! Drives me crazy! The summer evenings would still be plenty long:> One very nice thing about homeschool though is we just sort of ease into it - the only thing it makes us late for is church...

I really dislike the time change twice a year. I wish they'd just decide on one or the other and leave it there all the time.

Hate. It.

We dislike it, too. There have been times with our only littles bunch that we've just completely skipped it. It makes it harder to mesh schedules with others, but that was nothing compared to rearranging their clocks in their little bodies.
I'm still debating whether or not to make this change. A luxury I know few have.

I'm afraid I'm going against the flow here. We love daylight savings time. We pack a lot into those lighter-later nights! The only problem is the transition can be a little slow. But we build more sleep time in the first few days and it is okay.

We hate it--putting preschoolers to bed when it's light outside, and then getting up and driving the kids to school in the dark.
What's not to like about that?!

I hate to do it, but I have to disagree. I love the lighter evenings. We do have schools that start pretty late here in NJ, 9:10 am for elementary, so the kids don't get home until almost 4:30. We do a lot of sports, and the little kids love playing outside with their older school age siblings, and now we can! I never realized how lucky I was that my kids are not very affected by it. They still go to bed at the same time, and wake up at the same time, so I don't notice a difference, except how happy we all were to be outside last evening drawing chalk pictures at 6:30. I am sorry for those of you who have a hard time with it, not meaning to gloat or be uncharitable, just that I look forward to this eagerly every year.

I don't mind DST, but really dislike when it "ends" in October. The time switch makes it get dark at 430pm, and wastes energy having the lights on so early. In the NW where I live, it's usually dark in the winter anyway because it's always cloudy and rainy, and ending DST just compounds that. I think DST is outdated and needs to end!

I also love it but wish they would just leave it here all year .I see no reason to have it dark at 4:30pm in Dec. it is sooo depressing all winter.

I hate it--and way beyond the inconveniences it causes. I don't understand why people think it's okay to tamper with what God set up for us. DST is NOT the norm; it is NOT how God created the timing of sunrise/sunset--so those who say we should just solve the "problem" by moving to year-round DST scare me. The standard time from Oct-March is the norm and is how things are supposed to be--says God. Why do we think we know better?

I'm with Addie and Karen. I like having more sunlight in the summer, but I hate it when we lose that hour in the winter, when we need it most! I really don't see how it saves energy when I have to turn my lights on an hour earlier through the dark winter months. I'm fortunate that the time change doesn't wreak as much havoc because we're homeschooling, but it's still hard on little bodies.

I LOVE daylight savings. My husband works long hours, so it means that in summer he can come home and play outside with the kids for a while. It would be too dark without it. We do have to adjust our schedule a bit because we invariably stay up later and therefore need to let the kids sleep in later. The beauty of Homeschooling!! I do find that toward the end if Dst season, I'm ready for earlier nights and a more predictable routine.

For several years, I lived on the western edge of a time zone, then I moved to the eastern edge of the next one. When the time change comes in the fall, it feels like I've lost TWO hours!

I have to agree with those who love the change. I have to say, though, that the first week is tough, but after that it is great! The longer days make me realize spring is really on its way, and summer not too far off. We accomplish so much more in the garden and yard in the evenings. And we need that extra time to get the garden rolling. Even in the fall, when the time changes back, it is like the first sign of winter coming, and makes me feel somehow cozier in the house with the early evenings.

I think it's just one more way in which man is messing around with God's world. IT's a proven medical fact[ sorry I can't quote from where} That the changing of the NATURAL TIME does upset the body physically. I remember as a kid and as a mother raising two children and working part time as a Nurse. the time changes always messed up our routine. Then it seemed just as we were getting used to hte time it changed back. We need to leave God's world as He made it........

I'm afraid I don't see that DST is changing God's world. It changes how we as a society agree to function within God's world but to say it is changing God's world is an overreach. I love DST. I'm a runner and get up well before 6 am to get a run in before my kids get up so I pretty much get up in the dark anyway but DST means after dinner my family has time to enjoy the warm weather outside as a family.

I followed your link to Jen Fulwiler's article. I am in complete agreement with her. I don't understand why we have DST forced upon us.
