BBC productions: Little Dorrit
Sophia and I just finished watching this BBC adaptation of the novel by Charles Dickens. It was WONDERFUL! Dickens had such a sense of the harshness of circumstances that characterized many lives during the Victorian era - and also a strong belief in the ability of virtuous individuals to rise above those circumstances in a way that still speaks to modern times.
This morning I noticed that someone ordered the same series through my Amazon link, which reminded me I wanted to tell you about it. And the good news is that there are used DVD series available for as little as 74 cents.
This would be a great addition to your family library - and it could get your kids interested in reading Dickens. If you aren't familiar with the BBC productions available on DVD, you will definitely want to see more. They are excellent - with superior acting, cinematography and costume - while looking very natural and true to life.
Here's the link to Little Dorrit and a couple others we've watched - all are excellent and also available on Netflix. Or check your library and ask them to get a copy:
And also, not Dickens but an excellent BBC ongoing series we enjoyed tremendously:
I can't emphasize enough how committing to watch a rich and meaningful series with your family or - if everyone can't be gathered at the same time - one of your children, strengthens your bond. These productions are not just titillating, but stir your deepest emotions as you see people face adversity and rise above it through virtue and good character. Lots to discuss, lots to remember together.
If you have a large family, these are a great investment as your children will watch them again and again as they grow up. We often give our kids video sets for Christmas: a Jane Austen collection for Sophia one year, Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals for Maddy, John Wayne for Dad.

It is fabulous ! We ADORE that one. And it follows Dicken's book so very well.
I believe the same people did a Masterpiece film of Bleak House (Dickens) and we were sorely disappointed in that one. I've heard though that the much older versions of Bleak House (such as the one with Diana Rigg) are true to the book, which is excellent reading by the way.
WE READ DICKENS. Isn't he the best ? !
