"Natural" cereals vs. organic - you need to know

Just in case you are buying products labeled "natural" and thinking that they are somehow superior to conventional brands - and also a heads-up that several formerly organic brands have dropped that designation for "natural" - hence containing pesticides consumers do not associate with their trusted brands:

You might be interested in the movie FatHead. It's on netflix instant viewing. The filmmaker talkes alot about grains and how grains are affecting us negatively.

He doesn't go into it so much in the movie, but on his website he talks alot about how the grains we eat today are vastly different than the grains we had even 30 years ago. Very interesting stuff.

No surprise here. Although we can't begin to buy all organic, we have been reading labels, being discerning, and making different choices for over 10 yrs. now. And our health is all the better for it (and that could be a story all it's own).

We have three children, but we can't begin to justify buying boxed cereals or very many foods that are processed (but we do love our corn chips and I have love/hate relationship with limited usage of a milk alternative). My children eat SO much food!

We have discovered that the best option, for us, is to buy 50lb. bags of organic rolled oats. Buying in bulk gives us savings that allows us to afford to buy them organically grown. As a matter of fact, we just returned from a relaxing 8 nights at the beach and, in addition to some other foods that we took with us (frozen smoothies, too, Barbara), we rolled the top down on our 50lb. bag of oats (that thankfully was eaten down to less than 12lb.) and loaded that thing up with us. I just couldn't imagine buying enough oats from a grocer to feed them for the week and there is no limit to the amount of boxed/processed cereal that it would take to fill them up.

Don't miss understand, we do buy a bit of processed foods, but when we do, we try to read the product label as though we were dealing with a political issue......It's never quite what it seems on the surface. Thank you Cornucopia for putting something together to dispel more of the myth.

I hear that! Sometimes I'm amazed at the time required to keep enough food in the house. I buy huge sizes of everything, but I have to admit I nefver bought a 50 pound bag of rolled oats. On the other hand, I'll bet you go through that pretty fast.

Now that I'm thinking this through, I think I'm just going to drop prepared cereals and give the kids oatmeal. They really do love it and it's good for them and no worries about additives.
