Loudoun Supes revenge: attack on Christmas 2011
(Well, except for the curious case of Scott York who served on the board as a Republican, then ran as an Independent with the liberal coalition, and finally this year - sensing which way the wind was blowing - turning Republican again. Only time will tell the level of his sincerity.)
I guess the Board wanted to take one final swipe at the community who until 2009 had made a tradition of taking their children to see a privately placed Nativity Scene at the corner for 20 years. It wasn't enough that when the community fought back to keep their nativity, Christmas tree and Menorah, the BOS punished them by allowing displays by atheists which have bordered on hate speech.
The private citizens who've placed the traditional nativity - pictured above - were first in line to choose their spot this year and had chosen the traditional corner which they did not have in 2010, when they received a phone call notifying them that BOS had taken away that space because the Leesburg Courthouse Grounds Committee had recommended it:
ORIGINAL COURTHOUSE NATIVITY SPOT ABOLISHED "FOREVER"
The board of supervisor eliminated the original space where the traditional nativity was placed every year for 30 years in an almost secret maneuver. The action was buried in an Administrative report scheduled on Tuesday night, November 15.
It read in part "The Courthouse Grounds committee recommended that a space for religious displays be eliminated due to an aborist's recommendation that tree roots are threatened by foot traffic."
There are nine other spots available for religious displays and this year the Welsh Family will again place a nativity there on the courthouse grounds. 8 other displays including hate-filled attacks on Christians and other religious beliefs will be on display also.
The vote to eliminate "forever" the space where the nativity stood for 30 years was 7 yes, only Delgaudio and Lori Waters "no".
Response from Eugen DelGuadio:CITIZENS: STAND FOR YOUR FAITHMembers of any devout faith who believe in the plurality of America's religious traditions to allow the observance of all religious beliefs in the public place and the couthouse grounds should consider serving on the "Loudoun County Courthouse Grounds Committee". This entire committee is subject to appointments in January by the new board of supervisor.
CITIZENS: ASK FOR RE-CONSIDERATION OF THIS ASSAULT
The current liberal board majority has their final business meeting of their 4 year term on this day Tuesday December 6 at 9 AM.
Your opportunity to ask for the board to restore the original Nativity spot is to ask for a reconsideration during "public input" on Monday December 5th, the night before the Business meeting at 6:30 p.m.
You can ask the board majority to reconsider the abolishing of the original space for the nativity. The 7 members are, respectively, Chairman Scott York, Kelly Burk, Susan Buckley, Jim Burton, Andrea McGimsey, Stevens Miller and Sally Kurtz.
Or you can write the board at bos@loudoun.gov and ask them to reconsider their action by email.
