Thanksgiving books, films, activities, crafts
You know how you have Christmas decorations and books that you get out each year? Well, it's also great to have a Thanksgiving collection. These are materials I've used with my own children to help them understand the spiritual foundation and significance of this special day in our nation's history. Depending on where you live and who your children's teachers are, you can't always depend on that today.
I will be republishing all my Thanksgiving material this month (although you can see it all now by clicking my Thanksgiving category), but this is just to give you a head start in case you want to add any of these to your family's library.
If you follow the links to amazon, you can find more information, customer reviews (which are always helpful), and often good prices for used books (though you have to pay individual shipping). Don't forget if you order something to use the Super Saver feature while checking out - which offers free shipping when your purchases total $25. or more.
Here is my Thanksgiving round-up:
Audio/visual media:
Craft and activity books:
Thanksgiving picture books
In response to a request for picture books for younger readers, I found these, which do not refer to the history of Thanksgiving, but which introduce the concept of giving thanks and reinforce family bonds.
I used an A Beka book called Pilgrim Boy with all my kids growing up. It's an early chapter book - second or third grade reading level - which tells the story of the Separatists' move to Holland and why they left for America on the Mayflower years later. The beauty of it is that it's told from a child's point of view. My kids loved it. Oh, and there are used copies as low as 77 cents at Amazon - even with the shipping, it's worth adding to your home library.
